Story Movie

Bob, a con man on the verge of bankruptcy, decides, despite the warnings of his friend, a major police chief, to defraud the Deauville casino. Everything is planned to the last detail, but the police become aware of the upcoming scam.

Review 4K Movie

The movie is laden with fame and protected from the subjective assessments of the audience by the high-pitched evaluations of film critics. And this was started by François Truffaut himself, who called “Bob the Player” the first film of the “new wave”. But I will be subjective.

Before us is the story of Bob - one of the inhabitants of Montmartre, a genius robber who has withdrawn from the big business. He sleeps during the day, and at night he wins and loses money in various establishments, going from one to another. Bob has a weakness - he doesn't like pimps and treats their potential victims with paternal tenderness. Understandably, at the most important moment, tears where the thin is. When Bob runs out of money and decides on a daring but well thought out casino robbery, his plans become known to the police, thanks to the young lady's long tongue. Bob would like to cancel the operation, but the wheel of doom has already been set in motion.

Following the best traditions of noirs, Jean-Pierre Melville inspirationally conducts the game of light and shadow, offers unexpected plans, creates a lingering atmosphere of mystery. And yet, the story itself tends to bog down, bringing on a yawn near the middle. Perhaps a spoonful of humor would have saved the matter, as Italian films with a similar plot are famous for? Roger Duchene in the lead role reminds of Jean Gabin, but falls far short of the model.

And again I will remember François Truffaut. He said: “We had Jean-Pierre Melville in France, who, shooting a gangster movie, tried to convince us that we are facing a Greek tragedy”. It seems to me that in this particular case these words are closer to the truth than to the origins of the New Wave.
