Abel Davo, a master criminal with numerous crimes to his credit, is trying to flee the country. Former associates, who do not need unnecessary headaches with the police, are trying to get rid of Abel. The only one who comes to his aid is the thief Eric Stark.

A hardened criminal, left with two children in his arms, becomes an object of hunt by the police. Former accomplices hire a young but promising guy to take their former leader from Nice to Paris.... The movie starts with a dashing scene of robbery of cash collectors, continues with scenes of chases and shootings, but then the action slows down. The main thing in the movie is not shooting, but the life of French society of the late 50s. Abel Davos, a criminal who seems to have successfully escaped from the police, is surprised to find that there is no place for him among ordinary people. His former comrades have become bourgeois bourgeois and are not going to risk their well-being for the sake of a friend. Lino Ventura's character is doomed to loneliness, and these feelings of an outcast forced to hide from everyone are strikingly accurately conveyed in the movie. His former accomplices are squeamishly turned away from him, and he can't even walk down the street with his children - they might recognize him. He seems to be free, but he is forced to lead an underground life of an illegal.

Jean-Paul Belmondo as the young criminal Eric Stark plays strikingly soft and brings warmth to the human relationships shown in the movie. The duo of Lino Ventura and the young Belmondo is above reproach, the actors complement each other very well. If you take into account that in this company you will see Fellinievsky actress Sandra Milo ('Eight and a Half', 'Juliet and Perfume'), then the acting ensemble of the movie with good reason can be called interesting.

'Hot Asphalt' is one of the successes of screenwriter Jose Giovanni ('Second Breath', 'The Hole', 'Two in the City'). If in Hollywood cinema first of all created myths about modernity, the French filmmakers even in the detective genre tried to comprehend and understand life as it is, with all its tragedies, social dramas and imperfection of people.

The minus of the movie is some unevenness of dramaturgy, slowing down of action, when the viewer waits for the continuation of adventures and plot twisting, but that was the director's intention. The main thing here is the drama of a man doomed to loneliness in bourgeois society.

On the plus side, Lino Ventura's and Belmondo's characters with their individual traits make the viewer sympathetic (when they show humanity towards other people), but the criminal world as a whole is not idealized in the film.
