Story Movie

On July 4, 1969, an unknown assassin shoots a couple in love on the outskirts of Vallejo, California. A month later, the publishers of major newspapers begin to receive encrypted letters in which the killer, calling himself Zodiac, threatens to kill 12 more people if the text of the letter, containing the secret of his identity, is not published on the front page. In addition to police officers from different states, the investigation involves a seasoned San Francisco Chronicle reporter Paul Avery and a young cartoonist Robert Graysmith, who works at the same newspaper. Soon the killer strikes again.

Review 4K Movie

For more than 10 years he held the whole of San Francisco in fear. Communicating with the authorities through reporters, he wrote letters harshly rebuking the police for their inaction. The Zodiac would disappear for a while, then reappear. Sometimes the police began to doubt that behind the next murder was the one they were so vainly hunting for, and not some imitator. However, the pattern of the murders and the letters to reporters suggested that the Zodiac was still at work.

The movie is based on the real-life case of a serial killer known as the Zodiac, who committed a series of murders in San Francisco over a 12-year period (late 1960s and early 1970s) while mailing his messages to the police as 'ciphers' to newspapers. The case remains one of the most famous unsolved crimes in San Francisco.

The events of the film begin on July 4, 1969, when Zodiac committed his second attack (shooting in the car of a young couple, followed by a call to the police from an unknown person). On August 1, the killer sent three cipher letters to major newspapers, including the San Francisco Chronicle. Two of the paper's staffers, Paul Avery, who writes about crime, and cartoonist Robert Graysmith, were interested in his messages. The cipher is solved by an ordinary married couple and it says 'the love of killing'; 'all those killed in paradise will be my slaves' and 'man is the most dangerous animal'. 1.5 months later, an unknown masked man abuses another couple: on the shore of a lake, he ties them up and kills them with stabs. Detectives Dave Toschi and Bill Armstrong investigate. The maniac begins threatening to shoot up a school bus, and even goes live on TV. A 10 year long 'manhunt' begins for the unknown killer. Different state police departments and ministries - can't agree among themselves, and are confused about the evidence. Later on, numerous eyewitnesses and acquaintances of the Zodiac - a total of 2,300 suspects - come forward. In 1971, the police managed to identify a suspect - Union Oil service station employee Arthur Lee Allen. All indications are that he is the Zodiac, but the evidence is too little. After a while - journalists leave newspapers, and police officers change police departments.

“Zodiac” is a detective movie directed by David Fincher (Seven, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Munk), based on the book of the same name by Robert Graysmith. For a full picture of events, one should also read the book itself - it's an excellent investigation, and perhaps someone will come to their own understanding of the events. The first part of the movie is the police investigation, the second part of the movie is the investigation of the newspaper cartoonist who was the closest to the clue.

Fincher creates a sweeping, detailed and exciting exploration of a 'famous case' with good, acting work, brilliant, camerawork by Harris Savides and an attempt to 'understand the incomprehensible'. Jake Gyllenhaal (The Day After Tomorrow, The Marines, Prisoners) as Graysmith is a humble and caring father and meticulous 'hunter' of sensation; Robert Downey Jr. (The Avengers) as Avery is a defiant and subtle journalist; Mark Ruffalo as Tosca is a fine portrayal of the detective. Also of note is the fine work of John Carol Lynch as Allen. The work of the artists and costumers and the creation of the 1960s-90s era is the main and important thing about the movie.

The nickname Zodiac - probably originated from the name of the watch brand. The Zodiac case was officially closed in 2004, and the main suspect died of a heart attack before his alleged arrest. The life vicissitudes of the Zodiac search - in the end, turned out to be more confusing and obscure than the famous Zodiac cipher itself.
