Review 4K Movie
Even ten years ago, it was thought that the western genre had gone irretrievably. By that time there were already made and films after which it is impossible to say something new, and a kind of afterword, summarizing the rich biography. However, in this decade, the movie about brave cowboys decided to revive, but in a completely different form.
Already on the first frames of “Old Men” is unmistakably determined to what genre belongs to the new movie of the Coen brothers. Only the brothers are not interested in playing by the rules: having moved the action from the 80s of the nineteenth century to the 80s of the twentieth, the Coens decided not to stop there and turn the canons of the western inside out.
Yes, there are the obligatory heroes of such movies - a bad guy, a kind of positive hero and sheriff; godforsaken towns, near which the bad guys scroll their dirty deeds; instead of stagecoach - jeeps of drug dealers, full of dope and cash; instead of Indians - Mexicans; instead of a few thousand dollars - two million.
But the main character with a beautiful and unusual name, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), is not a brave lone hero, but a “deer hunter”, who unluckily finds two million problems in a small suitcase, and now has no idea how to cover his tracks and get away with it, so he avoids open confrontations with the bad guys, always running away. In a career-defining year, Brolin finally landed a starring role, playing a largely underdog with plenty of room left for one last decisive fight. Striking a balance between a pofigistic attitude to what's going on and concern for his loved ones, Josh makes the audience worry for his character and hope that everything will end well for him.
Tommy Lee Jones for his career has played so many different sheriffs and federal marshals that the image of the guardian of the law sits on him like a perfectly fitted suit from a world-famous tailor. The actor knows everything that is possible and impossible about such characters, which, in turn, helps him to create a more than memorable image of the sheriff, passively observing events and trying not to interfere in what is happening, repeating to himself: “I'm too old for this shit.”
But most of all the audience will discuss the character of Javier Bardem. A man with a ridiculous hairstyle, a peculiar sense of humor and perfectionism in relation to his work does not cause positive or negative emotions. Everything is much simpler: when you see Anton Chigurh, you feel fear and a desire to get out of the city where Chigurh is at the same time. Bardem, with his peerless performance, has constructed the perfect image of the very spawn of hell, an infernal evil that cannot be stopped or killed.
In the first ninety minutes, the Coens let their characters have a lot of fun, so that in the final part of the movie they can turn off the path and talk about serious things. Such a simple story in the beginning becomes a multilayered layer in the ending, where there are more questions than answers. Realism is replaced by symbolism. In a simple plot - one pursues the other, while the third pursues the second - we never see a shot of two of the three main characters together, which, in turn, symbolizes the incompatibility of the views of different generations. There is no place for old people in this changed world: youth is gone irrevocably, only dreams where unfulfilled hopes and dreams are remembered. The younger generation is sweeping away the old laws. It cannot be stopped. Life goes on: and what seemed incredible yesterday turns into everyday life; and what is perceived now as impossible will turn into reality in a generation.
Starting with the simple and moving on to the complex, the Coen brothers decided to end their story with a simple and old as the world truth: no matter what generation you belong to, you still have to have principles or rules that you follow in life, otherwise there is a high probability of not seeing the end credits.
Verdict: simple on the outside but more complex on the inside, a movie with hardly any weaknesses. In a few years, the movie will be called a modern classic. In a couple of decades, only the second word will be left of the above word combination.
