Story Movie

Welcome to Twin Peaks! A quiet little town in a picturesque valley with a population of 51,201, home to some darn good coffee and homemade cherry pie. Twin Peaks looks like a place where upstanding citizens devoted to family life live. At a glance, their lives seem idyllic. But only at first glance.
Things are not what they seem, and everyone has something to hide. A mysterious death and an investigation, more like solving an unusual charade. A mysterious diary, mystical disappeared witnesses, a strange red room, nightmarish hallucinations, ominous omens, and a schoolgirl Laura Palmer burning through life.

Review 4K Movie

To begin with: if you have not watched the series, then you have no chance to fully understand the meaning and appreciate all the splendor of this picture, watching this movie will be just a waste of your time. Twin Peaks is not just a town from the series, which embodied the one-story America with its backwoods life, it is a whole Lynchian polygon for analyzing the spiritual and social life of the American nation. Each character represents a certain type of person, with his behavioral model, stereotypes, psychological portrait, life history and dark, very dark past, if you have not watched the series - you do not know them.

Premise: In the early 90's the series put on the ears of the whole America, and after it the whole world, to assess the gravity of the national obsession I will give an example - the sacred question “Who killed Laura Palmer?” was brought to the front pages of major American newspapers, along with news about the war in the Persian Gulf. With the beginning of the second season, viewers flooded the producers with letters asking them to reveal the name of the killer, the writers refused (Frost and Lynch), but the TV bosses insisted. After the killer's name was revealed, interest in the series plummeted, not even helped by Lynch's introduction of a new storyline with villain Windom Earle, and the management of sponsor ABC announced the termination of funding. Lynch was angry and personally filmed the end of the series, where in retaliation mowed out almost all the main characters, making the output of the 3rd season absurd and impossible. After that he came up with the idea of releasing a farewell movie, which, being a prequel, will close the movie narrative about the life of the mysterious town and other worlds in the nearby forests, because the last scene of the movie closes the whole epic, it takes place after the events described in the series....

Plot: Action in Lynch's movies is a secondary thing, much more important is the inner content and presentation of it all. In this picture Lynch does not reveal anything new (for those who watched the series), the main achievement of this chronological retelling of events - more detailed psychological portraits of Laura and Bob, many of their actions became absolutely clear and logically explainable. Lynch colorfully showed the fears and mental anguish of the last days of Laura, well, and the embodiment of the process of decomposition of the psyche of this angel, bogged down in vices - above all praise ...

Questions: Certainly, all questions concerning surrealistic phenomena and things of Twin Peaks were solved in the course of the series (at least for me there were no white spots), in the movie one could expect to discover the mystery of the Red Room, the mystery of its purpose and interrelation with tepees, but this is probably a question that will forever remain a mystery behind seven seals. Everyone must perceive the Red Room in his own way, depending on the looseness of the subconscious and the warehouse of the psyche. As Lynch said:

“Even I don't know exactly what I meant. I can remember when I got the idea, but I don't know why. From a rational point of view, I realize that I had already used a similar floor pattern in 'The Head Flapper,' but everything else - the red curtains, the stylized design, the dancing dwarf - was a matter of inspiration. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't explain their significance, because intuition is irrational. The distinction between reality and imagination has never been entirely clear to me. I will probably be greatly surprised when one day I realize what it is. The whole of Twin Peaks would not have been possible without faith in the power of the subconscious.”

Bowie's appearance to the nation: I think Teresa Banks was not the first victim of the teepee dwellers and the FBI tentatively dubbed this series of murders the “blue rose” case. Probably the missing and long absent agent Phillip Jeffries (aka D. Bowie) investigated one of these murders and went very far - he managed to penetrate the gathering of tepee dwellers, but as we know, no one comes back alive from there, obviously, he became another victim. The scene with his appearance to Gordon and Dale in the form of some spirit, the reality of which was recorded only by CCTV cameras, followed by his dissolution into space - in the best traditions of Lynch's surrealism....

Boyle, McLachlan and Lynch: The transformation in the series heroine Boyle from a home girl in the fatal bitch radically changed and her acting career, she became very much in demand and because of employment could not take part in this project, replacing her Moira Kelly in the role of Dona resembles an empty place - an obvious disadvantage of the movie. Interestingly, it was Boyle who quarreled Lynch with McLachlan, at the end of the series the whole crew watched her stormy affair with Kyle, she indoctrinated him as if he was a hostage to Lynch's creativity, after which Kyle distanced himself from Lynch. “Through the Fire” was their last work together. After that, Kyle filmed a lot, but really interesting roles in worthwhile projects were disastrously few, well, the apogee of his acting peak was the scene in the series “Sex and the City”, where he is completely naked masturbates on the magazine Juggs.

Northwest Passage (Twin Peaks) is a large-scale project about the struggle between good and evil, imposed on the world of people and expressing the social realities of our time. The distinctive feature of the film is that in addition to the trademark Lynchian cynicism and sensible exposing misanthropy, there is a lot of black humor addressed to people who can appreciate the surreal grotesque. The biggest disadvantage of the movie is that the warm atmosphere of peace and tranquility of one-story America was lost, the spirit of the “hive” was lost, where everyone knows each other by face and name, smiles at each other, eats cherry pies in the same cafe, but has no idea about the true life of a person and the dark side of his soul. Among the pluses (in comparison with the series) it is worth noting more extensive cameo of Lynch and brilliant pantomime at the beginning of the movie performed by Catherine Colson.

Conclusion: evil is everywhere, it can hide and try on the mask of virtue, while there is no reason - it sleeps, but it is necessary to give the slightest reason - as evil immediately comes, and then it is impossible to resist the temptation and not to get out of its binds, and, going to all lengths, a person eventually gives him the most valuable thing that he has - life in the material world and soul in the spiritual world. Laura Palmer gave her life, but the soul is paid back, passing through the fire of vices and torment, she found peace, ascending to heaven, like a white-winged angel ...
