At the very beginning of the movie we see a small family celebration - a daughter's engagement is being celebrated. At the festive table in this pleasant evening gathered: the father of the family - Arthur Burling, a rich industrialist, his wife - Sybil, an honorable lady, engaged in charity, their son - Eric, working in his father's company, and, in fact, the culprits of the celebration - Sheila and Gerald. The young man gives his beloved an engagement ring, toasts and friendly jokes are heard. The evening smoothly comes to its logical conclusion - the mother and her daughter go into the living room to embroider, the younger son, having had a little too much to drink, goes to his room, and Arthur smokes a cigar and starts a conversation with Gerald about the position of the Birling family in society and how to behave in this regard. In short, a typical picture of the life of English aristocrats.

But suddenly police inspector Gull appears, who reports the suicide of a young girl Eva Smith - and all this idyll comes to an end. Conversations and constant flashbacks to the past of the main characters make it clear that each of them, in one way or another, is involved in the fate of the unfortunate girl, each of them may be indirectly responsible for her death ...

This is a film-parable about the fact that, often, in order to understand the perniciousness of their actions people need to see the dire consequences of their behavior. Too often each of us, without noticing, does things that negatively affect others. And the victims can be both loved ones and random people, whom we can forget about in a second and never remember again.

But, as the authors of the picture show us, it is enough to find out that Eva Smith did not exist at all, as all these remorse and worries disappear, life returns to its usual course, and all that occupies people is how to punish the insolent inspector. And it doesn't matter whether this Eva Smith died or not, whether she was alone or whether each hero had his own Eva Smith - Inspector Gull was talking about something completely different. It's a pity that only Sheila and Eric, the youngest characters in the story, could realize it. Apparently, society and its mores have not yet managed to spoil them completely. Anyway, we see who's who in this family. Any engagement is out of the question....

We can not say that this picture opens for the audience some new truths, but how often we forget about such simple things that make us human.

In addition, it is worth noting the magnificent game of Alistair Sim, who is simply created to embody on the screen the image of Inspector Gull. The movie itself is based on the play “An Inspector Calls” by English playwright John Boynton Priestley
