Three skilled con artists make a living according to their specialization. Lily, a middle-aged lady who has been through fire, water and copper, works for a bookmaker and makes a lot of money by cheating at the racetrack, artificially lowering bets on horse races. Her son Roy also followed in his mother's footsteps, although he chose a slightly different option for the application of forces; despite his youth, he is also considered a reputable fraudster with a long history. His sexy girlfriend Myra does not want to give in to Roy.

And here this trio gets a chance to stop once and for all with small trade. To do this, they have to venture into one big but very dangerous scam, which can provide them with the rest of their lives, but may as well cost each of them the rest of their lives. While Myra is making great efforts to get a young and talented Roy as a partner in order to hone the skill of throwing big, Roy himself decides to finally leave the game. At the same time on Roy has the most serious and selfish views of his mother ...

Painlessly and almost triumphantly entered the Hollywood mainstream with his previous film “Dangerous Liaisons” (1988), the Englishman Stephen Frears this time made a sharp turn in the other direction, demonstrating a rare ability to own any genre and a subtle knowledge of their features. Criminal plot, extracted from the novel by Jim Thompson, became an element of sophisticated author's game and allowed Frears to create the most skillful stylization of black film.
