An elderly millionaire was found brutally murdered in his own mansion—his body hacked to pieces with an axe. The valiant investigator David Corelli (David Caruso) immediately takes on the case, for whom finding and punishing the criminal is a matter of honor. However, certain details begin to surface that the investigator would have been better off not knowing, because people who do not want the truth to come out will not hesitate to interfere with the investigation.

Joe Esterhas, who wrote the screenplay for Paul Verhoeven's Basic Instinct, almost the only successful film in his otherwise unsuccessful screenwriting career, tried to repeat his success by bringing a similar screenplay to the screen with the help of director William Friedkin (The French Connection (1971), The Exorcist (1973)). The latter, who has also been experiencing a creative crisis lately, probably since The Exorcist, unfortunately did not reach new heights here, but, as if in a hurry, he presented a disjointed and unevenly edited story of a mysterious seductress nicknamed “Jade,” contributing to the editing of Esterhazy's original screenplay. The detective story, which began quite interestingly, unexpectedly changes course to car chases with victims and piles of twisted metal, and then to sluggish and uneventful scenes of interrogating suspects, with the intrigue quickly fading before the finale.

For a film that claims to be an erotic thriller, there aren't that many erotic scenes, which, by the way, don't look as impressive as, for example, in Basic Instinct. Here, they come across as overly constrained and almost non-existent — Linda Fiorentino, of course, is far from Sharon Stone, and she simply failed to create the image of a femme fatale manipulator. She is no more convincing than Madonna in the failed film Body of Evidence (1993), which, although enviously trying to rest on the laurels of Paul Verhoeven's film, contains much more interesting and uninhibited erotic scenes. In terms of acting, she is outshone by David Caruso and Chazz Palminteri. In general, the result is incomprehensible — the film was torn to shreds by critics, failed miserably at the box office, and did not win audience recognition. It did not turn out to be an exciting thriller, nor a spicy erotic tease, just a flirtatious, ambiguous title, behind which lies a crooked and poorly written script nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award, unmemorable characters, lackluster direction, and, as a small plus for the film, decent cinematography.
