Once, a long time ago, I saw a man. He was sitting on the steps, clutching his tie in his hands. I have never seen a more broken, sad, and disappointed person in my life. I think he didn't get the job he dreamed of. A couple of years later, I saw this man sweeping the bus stop. A year and a half later, I saw him drunk, lying on a bench. And yesterday, he was drunk again, his face covered in dirt and bruises from dried blood and contusions. In five years, the man had degenerated so much that he could hardly consider himself a human being anymore. The same story happens to most of the characters in this film. Whether they are guards, the prison warden, or prisoners. They all turn from petty crooks into violent rapists, murderers, or suicides.

As usual, British cinema is saturated with brutal, naturalistic scenes of life. Few others can convey the atmosphere of violence and bile so naturally. Scum does not break with tradition.
