A tropical paradise where all the pleasures of the world are available. A frenzy of colors, fantastic women, a sea of booze, any kind of drugs - and all for free or practically free! Reporter Richard Boyle knows El Salvador for what it is, having spent many unforgettable months here. And when his wife leaves him, he gets fired from his job and ends up in jail, he persuades a friend to flee here. Unlike Richard, who has gone through all the circles of hell, Dr. Rock is a simple, carefree adventurer. But the distant earthly paradise has become the scene of a bloody civil war.

There is no God in this country anymore. Every day innocent people die, and murderers go unpunished. It is impossible to tell the righteous from the guilty. Chaos and injustice reign supreme. It seems that the only true words are spoken by a priest a few minutes before he is murdered right in the church. This is El Salvador, a country on the brink of a new civil war every day. This is where James Woods' character goes in search of a new story. He is a journalist and cares only about the profits from hot news, which he immediately spends on local prostitutes and booze. But the horror he experiences in this godforsaken country forces him to take a different look at his own life and rethink his values. You rarely see Woods in a leading role, although, in my opinion, he is a wonderful actor. Here, he practically carries the entire film. He creates a multifaceted and interesting character who you immediately warm to, despite all his flaws.

Oliver Stone is a well-known truth-teller. Most of his films have sharp social undertones. Just think of JFK, Natural Born Killers, or Born on the Fourth of July. Sometimes the director's overwhelming desire to express his point of view detracts from the artistic side of the film, because he usually puts all the meaning into the mouths of the main characters without backing it up with expressive means. Nevertheless, this film makes an impression. The director confidently guides the viewer through all the twists and turns of the plot, without straying into pure documentary or humanistic pathos.

An excellent screenplay (Oscar-nominated), Woods' confident performance, and Stone's criticism of his home country's politics, which is far from the first time, make this film one of the director's best works.
