New York, 1933. World War I veteran Burt Behrendsen runs a small clinic and helps war-traumatized troublemakers like himself. One day he and his best friend and fellow soldier, lawyer Harold Woodman, are hired by the daughter of their former commander to perform an autopsy on the suddenly deceased father, who had just arrived from Europe and was about to give a speech at a gathering of his fellow soldiers. Burt and Harold had no idea how far it would take them, and that they would meet their soul mate, Valerie, a nurse in a French hospital with whom they had spent an unforgettable time in Amsterdam at the end of the war.

- "Oh, wondrous Amsterdam! How beautiful and mysterious you are!"

Such words I wanted to say at the end of the film, but, alas, I hasten to disappoint, most likely this will not happen. Unlike many other pictures, where the place of action is also an indirect character, or helps develop the storyline, in "Amsterdam", the viewer will be shown for 1/2 a minute. All the main action will unfold in New York in the 1930s. That painfully beloved and colorful New York with its retro cars, men in suits, and fashionable girls. But this will not dominate the frame either. Much of the time, the camera is focused on close-ups of the actors and their shiny-looking faces, only incidentally capturing the street romance of the past.

So the film tells us about a New York doctor who helps American World War I veterans recover from their injuries. With his former coworker and now his partner, a lawyer, he practices successfully until one day he is called in to perform an autopsy on a man. The autopsy reveals that the man, having recently arrived from Europe, had been poisoned. And why he was poisoned, the main characters, and have to find out, cutting through a series of incoherent facts, meetings from the past, and a large dose of painkillers. After all, the wounds of World War I still make themselves felt.

The creators didn't want or couldn't indulge in the plot, but the star cast is plentiful! Christian Bale, Taylor Swift, Robert DeNiro, and even Chris Rock. The others are just as expressive, but the ones listed above are the ones you can name without peeking into a piece of paper.

The plot is incredibly drawn out and oversaturated with lots of names and secondary characters, some of whom have little or no impact on the course of the story. I will say for myself that trying to fit all the new "acquaintances" in my head and to untangle the plot along the way was stressful.

The idea of the film boils down to the fact that the heroes miraculously prevent the arrival in a free America, a former military, which was bet on a group of influential people - the owners of large industrial enterprises, which in turn pursued the goal of uniting with the dictatorial Europe: Italy and Germany. Naturally, to establish profitable business partnerships. So much conspiracy, so much "crème brûlée".

In the end it is hard to guess what motivated the creators. If you take away the decor and the entourage of the 30's and put the usual musicians, comedians and Hollywood stars in our time, you get not even a movie, but a slicing of cinematic showreels with familiar actors.

Add to all that a very humble lava story, a couple of Chris Rock's self-deprecating jokes, a switch to Christian Bale's inner narrator, and you've got a recipe for "Amsterdam." I'm not sure what kind of mix of supposedly historical detective spiced with comedic witticisms viewers are expecting, but as they say - "food is served, sit down to eat, please."
