Los Angeles, 1948. Jake is hired by his namesake land dealer Jake Berman. Berman is convinced that his wife is cheating on him and asks Gittes to dig up every possible detail. Gittes, in turn, not only finds out all the details, but also offers Berman to "catch" his wife red-handed, right during an intimate rendezvous. The two Jakes set up an ambush for the unfaithful spouse. At the most crucial moment Berman, instead of making his wife a scene of jealousy, kills her lover. And all this could have been written off as a state of passion, if the murdered man had not turned out to be Berman's business partner. After the death of his business partner, Jake Berman is left with all the money. Now Gittes has to find out whether what happened was an accident or a cold-blooded planned murder....

Review 4K Movie

While I didn't particularly enjoy Chinatown, even though I gave it a seven, this film is of a similar caliber, but slightly better. More precisely, it is better in some respects and worse in others.

The first thing I want to say after watching the film is that it has a very strange pace, which is very difficult to grasp and, alas, is confusing. The plot is so full of all kinds of twists and turns, and the detective investigation is so often supplemented with all kinds of new clues, leads, and other details that the mind simply cannot process such a volume of information. And all this at a measured, sometimes even boring, pace. That's right, because of such a strange and, at first glance, simply impossible mismatch, we end up with a very chaotic film. Those two hours seemed to last much longer, but it can't be said that it was because of boredom. Although at times it was boring after all.

This film leaves you with a strange feeling. It seems like a great idea, the actors are great, and it's interesting to see Nicholson in the role of director, but something is still missing.
