Story Movie

A mysterious client invites Craig, an architect, to his home, and upon arrival Craig has a strange feeling that this place is familiar to him, even though he has never been here before. Review 4K Movie

Architect Craig arrives at a country house where the new owner has decided to carry out a small renovation. From the moment he arrives, Craig cannot shake the feeling that he has been here before and even knows the layout of the rooms. When the owner introduces him to the other guests, Craig declares that he is absolutely certain that he has seen everyone present before, and what's more, he is convinced that something terrible will happen here in the near future — he has seen it all, in great detail, in his dreams many times. One of the guests, Dr. van Stratten, seems to find an easy explanation, but the others are still interested in this case, especially since, as it turns out, everyone has their own story related to something inexplicable or even mystical.

When several directors get together to make one film, it always raises eyebrows. Such tandems are an experiment in themselves, regardless of whether they are famous directors or the most mediocre art-house hacks working together. Watching such films is not easy, primarily because they usually consist of several complete works by different authors, varying in form and presentation, and it is quite difficult for the viewer to “switch” from one to another in such a concentration.

The directors of this film may not be considered outstanding, but nevertheless, they have all left their mark on cinema. Certainly in British cinema. Alberto Cavalcanti, the most experienced of the directors of this film, managed to work in the silent film era, shooting, among other things, the adventure film Captain Fracasse. Basil Dearden, author of the topical Blue Lamp and Victims with Dirk Bogarde, as well as The Gentlemen's League and The Murder Bureau, is probably better known than the others. Robert Hamer made his mark with at least two remarkable films: Kind Hearts and Coronets, starring Alec Guinness (in eight roles), and The School for Scoundrels. The third of the four, Charles Crichton, is better known to modern audiences as the director of the comedy A Fish Called Wanda. In addition, like Haymer, he had the opportunity to work with Alec Guinness on the crime comedy The Lavender Hill Mob. But that would come later—for three of them, working on Dead of Night was their first serious job, essentially their film debut.

And, it must be said, the debut turned out to be a success. We will leave it to those who are more knowledgeable to judge whose contribution was more significant. And is it really that important? Despite being divided into novellas, the film turned out to be surprisingly exciting, and each novella, while subordinate to the overall rhythm of the picture, is interesting in its own right. The rapid and, in a sense, ambiguous final twist should impress not only fans of the mystical stories of Edgar Allan Poe or H. G. Wells. Such a film could only have been made there—in good old England.
