Review 4K Movie

The familiar large titles, familiar from “A Clockwork Orange” and “Full Metal Jacket,” presentably announce that the ensuing action will take place to the accompaniment of pleasant classical music and wide-closed eyes. A light surrealistic haze takes the shape of a bright, fashionably furnished room in which, against the backdrop of Shostakovich's symphony playing from the speakers, a young lady prepares her evening gown.

An elegant dress slips effortlessly down her body, falling to the floor, emphasizing her slender figure, revealing her perfect hips and firm breasts. She casually raises her hand, betraying a momentary weariness, and glances indifferently at the mirror... Even such small, subtle touches in a woman's outward behavior indicate her belonging to the highest, most exemplary society.
A minute later, the heroine's husband appears in the frame — an intelligent, diligent young man who is accustomed to responding to his friend's question, “How are you?” with a well-worn formula: “I'm a doctor, I've been married for nine years, I have a loving wife and a seven-year-old daughter.”
Together, they are the perfect couple, whose entire life follows a long-planned script.

Against this backdrop, their harmonious unity seems practically invulnerable. But “practically” is the key word. An inner world of torment and suffering, fear and self-deception, unconscious urges and unconscious desires, like rust, corrode the family idyll. A measured and prosperous existence is called into question simply because carnal libido takes over the mind. Her erotic fantasies and desire for infidelity manifest themselves in dreams. His sexual escapades in the night city endanger his loved ones and those around him. But the start has been given, the game of vice is in motion, and they are both already racing at full speed “to where the rainbow ends.”

Arthur Schnitzler copies Freud's psychosexual theory, presenting it as a work of fiction. “Dream Story” is full of colorful episodes, against which the main message fades, but the author's creative intent is not lost. Stanley Kubrick, focusing mainly on the overall atmosphere, describes the plot of Traumnovelle, observing the action from the sidelines and easily avoiding dreary moralizing. His film is filled with a dark aesthetic that gives the picture a hypnotic tone; the characters, as if descended from the pages of epic works and hiding behind a mask of falsehood, drown in the torments of vice, while remaining faithful and devoted to each other.
Through the veil of Eyes Wide Shut, images of screaming uncertainty can be traced as if on a delicate engraving. Inexplicable motives alternate with a stream of irrational actions. The characters are dualistic, two-faced, and at the same time, uniform and completely predictable. Kubrick masterfully reproduces the conflict between common sense and unconscious desire on film, provocatively challenging his audience. Who would want to openly admit what they are clearly hiding from themselves?
In his usual manner, the director asks questions, the answers to which lie somewhere off-screen, between the credits and the final scene. Eyes..., as the final stage of Stanley Kubrick's creative work, is in the best, signature style of its creator. The open ending unambiguously hints at a logical continuation. But, alas, the curtain falls. At the end of his life, the director made a film that was practically genius.
