Story Movie

Viridiana's uncle, who paid for her education, really wants to see her at his castle before she becomes a nun. In fact, her uncle has been in love with his niece for a long time. This passion so overwhelms Viridiana that she decides not to return to the convent.

Review 4K Movie

Viridiana is a young woman who wants to become a nun, but before that she must visit her uncle, whom she has never been close to, but who has always helped her financially. Unexpectedly, her uncle makes her a shocking proposal to become his wife.

Buñuel's film is not about faith in God; there is not a word about it in the film. The film is about the girl herself and the reasons behind her actions. If you look more closely, Buñuel does not explicitly show the motives behind her actions—they are only implied, and therefore this film is no less surreal than all of the Spaniard's other films.

Why does Viridiana want to become a nun? The answer is obvious—she is an orphan who has lived her entire life in a convent; she finds it difficult to imagine her life outside of it. Her uncle's proposal frightens her, just as venturing out into the big wide world frightens her. Although she herself rightly believes that she does not want to tie her life to this old lecher.

Finding herself in a difficult psychological situation, not knowing whether she had a sexual relationship with her uncle or not, being innocent of anything, she is left completely alone with her problem, but it becomes absolutely clear to her that the path to the convent is closed to her. Buñuel deliberately creates a situation in which the institution of monasticism does not look in the best light and the monastery cannot help Viridiana, who has devoted many years to it.

However, our heroine does not despair and sees salvation in helping the poor. But here, too, disappointment awaits her.

Viridiana, having devoted her life to sacrifice: to the convent and to serving people who did not appreciate it at all, runs away from her own life; from her uncle's proposal, from her cousin, who is in love with her, is not bad-looking, and despite all his negative qualities, is clearly more worthy of her attention than her “communards.”

Buñuel uses certain scenes as keys to the heroine's character. For example, the scene of Viridiana's sleepwalking suggests that she has hidden desires that her consciousness suppresses, and they only break through into reality in her dreams in the form of automatic actions.

The ending is even more controversial in its interpretation than the entire film, but the cards can be seen as a symbol of the heroine's departure from her former beliefs and an attempt to treat life as a game that you play yourself, regardless of chance, i.e., the cards you are dealt.
