It all starts as a lively, realistic drama, and it's easy to get caught up in the story. But gradually, surrealism seeps into the plot. The irony is that viewers who are sometimes skeptical of the fantasy genre watch this film and do not notice that what they are seeing is the classic hero's journey in a strange, almost magical world, only set in New York City.

Questions about the characters' motivations.

The main complaint about the script is the storyline of Mary-Ann, the main character's wife. Her transformation from a sane woman into a broken personality looks as if the authors decided that loneliness in a luxurious apartment was enough for such a radical breakdown. The human psyche is more complex than that, and such motivation seems insufficiently justified for such a serious diagnosis.

There are also questions about holes in the chronology when attempting to play up the mystical element. This is confusing, and some key scenes between John Milton and Mary Ann leave the viewer in a state of shock. When did this happen? Under what circumstances? If the authors do not provide clear answers, it remains unclear why they are focusing on this at all.

The ending and aftertaste.

Just when it seems that the film is about to lose touch with reality, the plot takes an interesting twist. However, the final scenes with Al Pacino's character and a bold hint at the inevitable cyclical nature of events somewhat spoil the impression. It seems that the cool idea at the end was simply “brought to fruition” for the sake of a spectacular shot, without too much concern for the coherence of the narrative as a whole.

This is a kind of Wolf of Wall Street with demons and biblical pathos added. The film is powerful, and many of John Milton's phrases make you think seriously, but there are still big questions about the structure of the script.
