Story Movie

The siren howls. The flashes blind the eyes. An ambulance rushes through New York City at night, headed for death. Frank Pierce is a paramedic working the night shift. Frank is constantly haunted by visions - the ghosts of people he never managed to save. His life is turning into hell, he is on the verge of a breakdown, and yet he continues to fight death.

Review 4K Movie

The dark streets of New York, illuminated by the dim light of street lamps, mesmerize, but at the same time repel a person accustomed to live and work in this city during daylight hours. As the sun goes down, all the filth and filthiness crawls out from under the back alleys and completely envelops the streets of the big city. New York City takes off its daytime garb and becomes a different city full of pain and despair. On the roads are passing cars with lighted headlights, lights which beckon the inhabitants to plunge into this mysterious and incomprehensible abyss. But what lies behind these dark back alleys, what kind of life hangs in these dirty streets?

Martin Scorsese again turns to the theme of his favorite city of New York and here, as well as in “Taxi Driver”, the director tries to show the viewer the city in an unusual role for us, as if through another prism of reality. But here all the action of the movie “Raising the Dead”, except for small episodes, takes place at night, and it is difficult to compare the city of New York in the sunlight and in the night light. Rather, the director focuses on the fact that the viewer simply has not seen this city at night, and if he has, he has no idea what can hide in the dark streets and only a look from the outside can open his eyes to reality.

To this end, Martin introduces into his narrative an ordinary paramedic, Frank Pierce, who works the night shift. His job is difficult, unpleasant and he has a great responsibility for the sick and every minute you can expect anything, having arrived at a new call. This work is not for the faint of heart, because to see every night dying of overdose drug addicts, suicidal suicides, neurotics, prostitutes and other far from ideal and healthy patients, not everyone can do. A cup of coffee or a shot of alcohol can help you try to ignore all this nastiness.

It is through the eyes of Frank that Scorsese tries to convey to the viewer the whole nightlife of New York. It cannot be said that Frank is strong in spirit and powerfully opposes this nightmare. No, the night city absorbs him, drives him crazy, brings a bunch of strange questions, and absurd thoughts and images completely dominate his head. The feeling of guilt for the people who died in his arms does not give him rest, and the ghosts of these people are constantly seen by Frank, they look at him and as if they want to get an answer, but they do not ask questions.

It's hard not to succumb to this nightmare, not to absorb all this night terror and not turn into a night zombie without heart and soul, spinning the wheel of a squad car and calmly driving around on calls. Maybe his partners have already become like that, or maybe it is only him, as a more vulnerable person, live absorbed by this crazy, always awake city and there is no antidote to this madness.

Many admirers of Martin Scorsese's work or Nicolas Cage, who played the main role in this movie, may not like this picture because of its depressive subtlety and complexity. Here Cage did not play a hero-savior or hero-lover, to the images of which the viewer has long been accustomed. In this complex movie Nicholas managed to psychologically subtle and professionally reveal the horror of the common man, to show the viewer how everyday life can affect a person, how it can drive you crazy.

This picture is not similar to all other creations of Scorsese. Martin decided to make a completely different movie, to break away from his paintings and step in another direction, in another direction and reveal to the viewer seemingly mundane facts and events, but carrying a far from simple meaning. And after watching this picture, you can once again make sure that Scorsese is one of the genius directors who likes to improvise and the experiment of his hand “Raising the Dead” is a good proof of that.
