Story Movie

Millie gets a job as a live-in maid for the wealthy Winchester family, who live in a country mansion. The girl has just been released on parole and needs this job, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to find common ground with the mistress, Nina, who is clearly not herself and regularly picks on her. Her husband Andrew, on the other hand, is charming. He smooths over any conflicts and seems to have his eye on Millie.

Review 4K Movie

Movies in the genre of “servants moving in to live with a wealthy family” are not uncommon. We have seen a million similar projects that unfolded in all sorts of scenarios, ranging from the abnormality of the servants to peculiar children. Will The Maid offer us anything new?

The life of young beauty Millie has not turned out well. She is in dire straits and needs at least a stable job. After faking her resume, the girl confidently enters the Winchester family mansion, and the sweetest mother and wife, Nina, immediately hires her as a maid. But from the very first day, Millie is shocked to learn that Nina has been diagnosed with psychosis. Will the maid be able to handle her crazy mistress? Or maybe it's not Nina who's crazy, but Millie, who has a huge skeleton in her closet? Or maybe the killer is the gardener?

In my opinion, the film rather clumsily uses all the clichés of the genre. One of the most hackneyed strategies in thrillers is to portray good characters as bad and vice versa. It has been used so much that I think you would have to have never seen a movie in your life to fall for it. The authors also carelessly use Chekhov's guns, which ideally should fire at a moment unexpected for the viewer, while in the film the viewer's attention is artificially drawn to the necessary things. "Look, PORCELAIN! Did you see it? Are you sure?" If you suddenly get distracted and miss the porcelain being shoved in your face, the creators will kindly do it three more times so that you definitely understand that it will play a key role at the end. This, by the way, is just one example; the entire film is filled with such gimmicks.

Let's talk about it. Two hours and 11 minutes is a long time. The film is very monotonous and has to resort to repetition several times to fill the screen time. From the very first scene, the viewer is made to understand that Nina is crazy. And for some reason, after that, they show an hour and a half of different situations in which she demonstrates this. This would work if the degree of madness heated up gradually and if, at the beginning, the moments of her madness were debatable, for example, or seemed only to Millie. But no, the first scene after Millie gets a job is Nina destroying the entire kitchen in a fit of aggression. Why do we need another hour and a half of being told that she is DEFINITELY crazy? We get it.

The ending is just as chewed up. Let's be objective, by the time the long flashback that explains everything begins, the viewer has already figured it all out. A beautiful Poirot-style monologue at the end only works when the culprit and their motives are unknown. When you've already figured everything out, and they spell it out for you like you're stupid so that you DEFINITELY understand, it's a sign of a poor-quality script.

The erotic part of the thriller also went over my head. Sidney Sweeney is a symbol of vulgar sexuality in Hollywood, so most of the time she is either naked or half-naked. In commercials, in interviews, in movies, in TV series - everywhere. So once again, watching her in bed scenes was not something impressive or stunning for me. As an actress, Sidney is mediocre to me, so intimate scenes with her don't come across as hot—she doesn't know how to work her face and convey the necessary emotions. And we've already seen her body a hundred times.

Let's talk about the pros, which, of course, exist. Beautiful, vivid images, a luxurious mansion in the setting of an American winter. I also give the cast a plus—Amanda did an excellent job with the role of bipolar Nina, Brandon Sklenar fits perfectly into all the roles assigned to him, and Michele Morrone could be given an Oscar for his evil gaze. The film is not bad despite its length, it doesn't feel stifling, and even despite its predictability, it is interesting to watch and observe the characters' actions, as well as their transformation in different directions.

So what do we have in the end? The film is mediocre. Its current rating of 7.2 on KinoPoisk is, of course, greatly overestimated. The plot is trivial, the lead actress Sidney Sweeney does not shine with her acting talent, and there are many holes in the plot. Despite this, I don't think anyone will be greatly disappointed after watching it. It fulfills its main function - it entertains the viewer, immersing them in the story and keeping them watching until the very last frame.
