The United States, during the Great Depression. Hard times force union activist Bill Shelley to become the leader of a gang of train robbers. This is how he earns the nickname “Limpy” and wins the heart of Bertha Thompson, a girl from a small town in Arkansas with the criminal nickname “Freight Car.”

After her father died right before Berta’s eyes—due to the negligence of her own employers—the young woman, now without a breadwinner, set out to travel the country. What follows is prison, an escape, and a life on the run. But all of this happens with ease, almost playfully, because these young people don’t see themselves as criminals—they simply want to be free in an unfree country.

A simple and rather uncomplicated film, largely made so by the in her own way naive and charming Barbara Hershey.

The card shark (Bernie Casey) deserves a special mention—at first, he appears as a coward, a loser, and a generally spineless man, but by the end, he’s standing in the doorway, ready to shoot with both hands, and he’s no longer that timid weakling who was ready to hide under the table the moment someone raised their voice at him.

The most vivid impression is left by the heist scenes, shot with a touch of irony and a fondness for the main characters.
