Story Movie

A modest landowner living in northern England at the dilapidated Wuthering Heights estate once takes in a homeless boy and brings him home. The owner’s daughter, Catherine, names him Heathcliff, and the children become inseparable. A few years later, when her father has finally squandered all his money and it is time for Catherine to marry, she seizes the only option she considers suitable—a young upstart who has settled nearby. Heartbroken, Heathcliff leaves Wuthering Heights in despair, only to return years later as a wealthy gentleman.

Review 4K Movie

Emerald Fennell is a director with a distinctive style, and her new film proves it once again. It’s just a shame that, amid all this visual spectacle, Emily Brontë’s voice is completely lost. The 2026 version of "Wuthering Heights" is not an adaptation of the classic novel, but a remix of it, where all the important themes of the original have been replaced by a single one: how beautiful and agonizing it is to desire one another when surrounded by fog and expensive dresses.

Fennell’s version is a free-wheeling fantasy. But the problem isn’t the freedom; it’s the substantive emptiness of this fantasy. From a novel that deals with class, racism, violence, trauma, social inequality, and psychopathology stemming from humiliation, only the headline-grabbing elements remain here: passion, death, and forbidden love. Everything else is deemed irrelevant and thrown overboard along with the second half of the book.

What works is the chemistry between Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. It’s genuinely there, and it’s genuinely impressive. Robbie plays Katie as a flighty, selfish, yet sincere woman caught between duty and obsession. Elordi is excellent as the wounded macho man with a gold tooth—his Heathcliff resembles a rock star who accidentally stumbled into the 18th century.

The costumes are incredible. From the red hood to the wedding gown—Margot Robbie looks perfect. Jacqueline Durran has done a magnificent job. The interiors are impressive too, with plenty of bold ideas. But the longer you watch, the stronger the feeling that there’s nothing behind these ideas and all the glitz.

There are far too many bedroom scenes that are completely unnecessary. The characters engage in debauchery—and all of this takes up screen time that could have been used to develop the characters, explore the aforementioned themes, or at least provide a clear motivation for their actions. However, this is Fennell’s signature style, and it would be foolish to expect anything else from her.

The film turned out to be beautiful and emotional, but for those who remember what Brontë actually wrote about, it’s simply an expensive illustration in the margins of a great novel. Without its depth, without its cruelty, without its real pain.
