Makoto and Kiyoshi’s generation indulges their desires. Makoto is in high school. One day, Kiyoshi, a college student, rescues her from a man who is attacking her. The next day, he meets up with her; at once sensitive and cruel, he insists on having sex with her, and then dumps her. A week later, she calls him. While Makoto is waiting for Kiyoshi at a bar, two pimps approach her. Once again, Kiyoshi rescues her. This time, their relationship truly begins. Makoto grows close to Kiyoshi and continues her studies at school. However, Makoto’s early pregnancy and a brief stint in prison change their relationship.

Sometimes you don’t stop to think that it’s possible to ruin your life so easily, so confidently, and so purposefully—and right at the very beginning. She’s 17; he’s 20 at most. The world is their oyster. She’s a high school student; he’s a college student. He saved her from a rapist one night, and she fell head over heels in love with him. But instead of building a secure future, this couple begins to lead such a wild and immoral lifestyle that it’s hard to believe. There’s dropping out of school, cutting ties with their parents, betraying their closest friends, mutual infidelity, and, to top it all off, an illegal abortion. One can only wonder what all his numerous lovers and mistresses saw in the main character. The more cruel his treatment of the women around him became, the more they loved him. As for the female lead—a schoolgirl who is physically stunning—how, just how, could she fail to learn anything from this hopeless relationship? It felt as though, throughout the entire film, I was watching children who knew nothing but how to sleep with each other and make one mistake after another, all to no avail. They never grew any wiser. The film is actually very decadent. And while there’s still a glimmer of hope in the first half, the second half is like an elevator that’s gone off the rails and is hurtling toward the end. And for the main characters, the ending was just as devastating—they were simply shattered. I don’t know what the director was trying to say—that you can’t live like that? The film is relatively unknown, but this kind of theme was explored later in Japanese cinema as well. These include the 1979 film *All Shades of Blue* and the 1998 film *Ballet of the Pulse*; both feature this kind of ruthless protagonist, so apparently this type of character is by no means rare in Japan. It’s just a shame that it all always ends the same way—and so quickly. All in all, the film comes highly recommended, and my assessment is entirely positive. Mid-century Japan also comes across as very colorful and optimistic (in contrast to the painful ’80s and the downright bleak ’90s).
