Gloucester, Massachusetts. A deaf family runs a fishing business. Ruby, 17, the only hearing member of the family, helps her deaf parents and brother fish. At school, she joins a local choir where she realizes she loves to sing. The choir director convinces her to consider music school, and now the girl is forced to choose between her family and her new dream.

Another film like 'The Sound of Metal' about the deaf and dumb, but this time it does not delve into psychology, like Marius Marder's film, nor does it focus on the acceptance of the new self and how to live with this new self. Instead, this film shows what it's like to live in a 'special' family when you're not 'special' at all, focusing not on the illness itself, but on family relationships, on the conflict of interests, raising the question of which is more important, personal life or family, and how to combine the two concepts in general.

Ruby Rossi is a high school student living in a family of deaf people, she helps her parents and older brother with fishing and is also a sign language interpreter. At school she joins the choir and discovers her talent as a singer, Ruby's teacher suggests she go to music college, but she doesn't know what to choose, her family or her future.

The film is divided into two plot lines, the first one concerns Ruby's passion for music, her preparation for the school play, her lessons with the teacher and the guy she will sing a duet with, this line is interesting because it reveals the main character, her talent, the second one is related to family business, it is just uninteresting, especially in the background of the first one, this line impairs the dynamics and its reduction would have been only for the good. When these two lines come into conflict, it becomes more interesting to watch the second one, because the main character's interests are specifically affected.

At the same time, the film seems a little too silly at times, this is true of the conflict between Ruby and her brother, it doesn't work at all. First of all, the relationship between these characters is barely revealed, which makes it impossible to feel the conflict. Secondly, it has no denouement, yes, it just ends at one point out of the blue, actually, just as it began. And on top of that we have to mention the humor, because the movie is a comedy-drama, the humor is just awful, something between toilet and childish, harmless and this fusion looks repulsive, at least in this case. 'Oh look, the main character's parents are having sex when her boyfriend is visiting and they get caught', 'oh look, the man wanted to say hello in sign language and accidentally said 'I'll fuck you', it's just so funny and there's so much of that in the movie. I, of course, have nothing against low humor, but, again, it looks bad here, well, thank God, at least, not at the level of the most disgusting comedies, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to stand it.

A lot of people praise this film, I can't do it, but I can't say that it is bad either, because it is not true, it has both pluses and minuses, the latter, unfortunately, is enough, however, it is still not a bad movie.
