Story Movie

Karen and Michael Carr, a married couple from Los Angeles, lead a quiet family life until one night a burglar breaks into their home. Michael tries to defend his home and wife with a golf club, but the intruder grabs a kitchen knife and takes his wife hostage. Fortunately, the criminal flees without harming the couple. The couple calls the police, and that’s how Police Officer Pete Davis first arrives at their home; they soon become friends with him. One evening, Pete takes Michael along on patrol and apprehends a burglar who had broken into the Carrs’ home. Pete suggests beating up the criminal, but Michael refuses and realizes that he and his wife would be better off staying away from the police officer.

Review 4K Movie

"Unlawful Entry" is a highly topical thriller about uninvited guests in the house who aren't so easy to get rid of. It's actually surprising how little-known director Jonathan Kaplan managed to land three celebrities at once—Kurt Russell, Ray Liotta, and Madeline Stowe—who form a sort of “love triangle.” The result is an intriguing film that will undoubtedly keep even the most seasoned viewers on the edge of their seats. After all, the best Hollywood thrillers came out in the late 20th century, and it seems the filmmakers exhausted their creative ammunition right at the start of the 2000s. Because many years have passed since then, and I can’t recall a more suspenseful and masterfully crafted story about an overly maniacal, intrusive guest.

In one fateful moment, husband and wife Karen and Michael had a stroke of bad luck—after a burglar broke into their home and managed to escape, they called the police. It’s standard procedure, something you’d see in any American movie where a similar crime takes place. But no one could have predicted the consequences it would lead to. An overly zealous officer, Pete Davis, began to show a suspicious interest in Michael’s wife, ostensibly out of concern for the safety of their home. However, very soon his behavior became genuinely frightening, and the happy couple’s life turned into a living hell. Not only did Officer Pete start showing up on their property constantly, but he also had the audacity to overstep his authority.

This is called abuse of power, and indeed, what is an ordinary civilian to do when faced head-on with a law enforcement officer? One who has set his sights on your wife and is ready to destroy your peaceful life by any means necessary. Kurt Russell’s character has no choice but to resist, by any means necessary. And in the end, the overly intrusive cop will have to “come to terms” with the fact that breaking up other people’s marriages isn’t the best idea, even if you have more privileges and a mind that’s not quite right.
Incidentally, this aspect makes "Unlawful Entry" a somewhat amusing film. What happens on screen isn’t funny in and of itself—it’s even scary at times. Especially if you stop for a second to imagine that something like this could actually happen to anyone in real life.

But the way Ray Liotta’s character behaves leaves no doubt that Officer Pete is simply a lonely lunatic who clearly needs medical help. And how he managed to stay on the force at all is a complete mystery. The film boasts well-crafted dialogue—from the very beginning, the maniac’s tone alone makes it clear that nothing good awaits Michael and Karen. It was particularly interesting to watch Kurt Russell’s performance.
By the way, five years later he played a similar role in "Crash". But "Unlawful Entry" turned out to be “more entertaining,” thanks to the villain’s completely irrational behavior. And the powerful climax only underscores that director Kaplan’s 1992 film was the best of his entire career.

In my opinion, it’s an excellent action-packed thriller from the ’90s, featuring an unforgettable performance by Ray Liotta.
