Story Movie

Struggling to come to terms with a recent tragedy on the job and his breakup with his wife, Ulysses arrives in the small town of Normal, Minnesota, to temporarily fill in for the deceased sheriff. Two yakuza members who have fallen out of favor are also sent here from Osaka on a mission. Ulysses finds the town to be safe, almost sleepy, and friendly, and he gradually gets drawn into its new, unhurried rhythm of life as he helps the locals deal with their everyday problems. But one day, the peace comes to an end when a bank robbery occurs in the city.

Review 4K Movie

I’m sure it came as a big surprise to many viewers, myself included, that Bob Odenkirk—who spent most of his career playing understated dramatic roles—would suddenly make a bold career shift and become an action star. We’ve seen this before with Liam Neeson, and he looks quite at home in the role of a fearless champion of justice.

Well, now it seems we’ll have to get used to Odenkirk in this role as well, since he’s already successfully taken down everyone left and right in the *Nobody* duology, and now he’s set out to restore order in the small town of Normal—after which Ben Wheatley’s film is, in fact, named.

The plot takes us to Minnesota, blanketed in snow and cold, where a small town called Normal is located. It’s a quiet and, one might even say, dreary place where, at first glance, nothing of significance happens. Well, except that the local sheriff recently died here, and a suitable replacement must be found for the time being. This is exactly what Ulysses, played by Odenkirk, decides to take on.

For him, the trip to Normal is a chance to take his mind off things and relax a bit. Personal tragedy and problems with his wife have taken a heavy toll on him, so a change of scenery for a couple of months or weeks might do him some good. But in Normal, Ulysses had to face something far more dangerous than patrolling the deserted streets and drinking warm coffee at the local diner.

The hero’s peace of mind came to an end the moment the hapless Lori and Kit decided to rob a local bank. They aren’t exactly bad people—more like luck-seekers who constantly find themselves in trouble. It turns out that the very bank they were planning to rob contains something extremely valuable—and it’s not just ordinary money. If it falls into the wrong hands, heads could roll—and the powerful figures in Normal certainly don’t want that to happen.

But now, the most important thing for Ulysses is to figure out exactly what’s in the bank’s safe deposit boxes and how exactly this could affect the future not only of the town but also of himself, since his enemies have no intention of leaving the cocky sheriff unharmed. Having watched this movie, I can say with certainty that the writers of “John Wick” were among those responsible for it.

The lead screenwriter of “Normal” worked on the entire franchise with Keanu Reeves, and his influence is evident here as well—a lone hero against the whole world, with a wild, frenzied glint in his eyes. That’s exactly what Odenkerk’s character is like here.
But at the same time, this movie has quite a bit of humor and funny moments, which sets “Normal” apart from the John Wick series.

And I like this approach because Odenkirk plays a hero of a somewhat different type than Neeson or Reeves. He’s good at shooting and breaking bones, but at the same time, he can crack a good joke and even make new friends, even though he’s used to operating mostly on his own. Although he is, after all, a police officer and, by definition, is simply required to patrol dangerous neighborhoods as part of a team.

But here, Odenkirk is the main star, and even the supporting characters shouldn’t overshadow him, because we’re watching this movie precisely for Ulysses, who was Solo in another “universe.” Of course, the first third of the film is rather slow-paced and shows us daily life in a small town called Normal. But I actually like that they showed us this place from every possible angle.

Well, that’s when the real thrill ride we’re all here for finally begins. Normal literally explodes with wild and unstoppable action, which is skillfully staged—and you can tell that the filmmakers, led by Ben Wheatley, wanted to pleasantly surprise us after all the “Ballerinas” and “John Wick” movies. And I think they succeeded.

Overall, for me, *Normal* is an excellent action movie that lifts your spirits, is quite entertaining, and raises the bar for action films to a high level—even as it becomes increasingly difficult to surprise us. Fans of Bob Odenkirk and hard-hitting films in the vein of *John Wick* can definitely give this a watch.
