Setbacks have plagued William his entire life. Especially this sweltering summer. His employer sent him on indefinite leave. A court order prohibits him from seeing his daughter. Furious at the whole world, William decides to seek revenge. Destroying everything in his path, he fights his way through the sweltering city to make it to his daughter’s birthday. People see him as a maniac, and only the experienced detective Prendergast knows the reason behind William’s aggression.

An amazing movie—simply amazing.

We all have those moments in life when literally everything starts to drive you crazy—every little thing, a glance from a random passerby, and so on.

And that’s exactly the moment the main character is going through. He’s an unremarkable guy—he doesn’t even have a name (in the credits, he’s listed as D Fens, after his license plate number). Today is his young daughter’s birthday, but due to a court order, he can’t even visit her. He’s a typical everyman, always wearing a white shirt and tie, with intellectual-looking glasses, clean-shaven, and making a quite pleasant impression.

And then it occurs to this protagonist that it would be nice to wish his little girl a happy birthday. Or rather, he doesn’t even think of it that way: “I’m just going home.”

But on the way home, there are thousands of problems typical of any big city—here’s a Korean shopkeeper who doesn’t really know English, local thugs asking, “Got a cigarette?” or “What if I find one?”, fast-food joints with clueless clerks… but then again, that’s the world we live in, isn’t it? What am I even talking about?

And the protagonist… no, he doesn’t start seeking revenge, as the synopsis suggests—he says himself: “I just wanted to walk home, but everyone keeps getting in my way.”

And at the other end of the spectrum in this story is a police officer with just one workday left until retirement, whom his superiors and colleagues call a wimp and a crybaby....

The film turned out to be nothing short of a masterpiece. At first, Douglas’s character evokes both sympathy and pity—the very things he’s protesting against are so familiar and relatable to all of us. Especially since Schumacher portrayed all these fast-food workers, thugs, and beggars in a grotesque yet very realistic way. If you were to remove Douglas from these scenes, you’d be left with a very good satire on the life of this society.

But the director also shows that when a person crosses a certain line in solving problems, they can simply lose their mind. Throughout the film, Douglas brilliantly demonstrates how a clerk worn down by life can turn into a psychopathic maniac if he doesn’t stop himself in time. And what an elegant directorial touch to illustrate this point—midway through, the protagonist takes off his white shirt and puts on a military uniform.

Detective Prendergast (Robert Duvall) is also never referred to by name by anyone in the film until the very end. In the course of this one day, he goes through more than he did in his previous forty years on the force. And Duvall does a fantastic job playing this character, who must shake off the label of a bumbling fool and finally become a real cop.

All in all, I recommend everyone watch this movie. In my opinion, it’s a very realistic and powerful film.
