Story Movie

Experienced pilot Whip Whitaker miraculously avoids a plane crash and, by making an emergency landing, saves the lives of nearly all the passengers. Whip is hailed as a hero, but the more details about the crash emerge, the more questions arise: what really happened on board the plane…

Review 4K Movie

The legendary Zemeckis, director of "Back to the Future" and "Forrest Gump", embarked on a crusade in the early 2000s to popularize films made using motion capture technology (where actors are covered head to toe in sensors to create a computer-generated image). These films turned out to be a flop—nobody wanted them, and they all bombed at the box office—so Robert returned to live-action filmmaking, directing the second R-rated film of his career. Nudity, drugs, and profanity—this is Zemeckis’s most adult film to date, in which he seems to rival Scorsese in depicting just how low a person can sink.

This film isn’t about a plane crash or investigating the causes that led to it; it’s an exploration of alcoholism, as Whip spirals into depression and drunkenness (I wonder—could it be that Zemeckis is reflecting on his decade-long obsession with green-screen experiments?). The acting is, as expected, brilliant—Washington is mesmerizing as a proud, far-from-heroic man whose myriad flaws are preyed upon by vultures, and Kelly Reilly is a revelation as his drug-addicted friend (though she is rather carelessly written out of the film at some point).

This was Zemeckis’s last box-office success for the time being. Afterward, he returned to making more child-oriented films and eventually ended up with the mediocre remake of *Pinocchio*, which they didn’t even dare to release in theaters.
