The French film “Black Box” is an excellent example of a fast-paced crime-drama thriller in which, in addition to the detective element, the filmmakers introduce the audience to the fascinating work of an air crash investigation commission, showing in great detail the process of decoding flight recorders.

At the center of the plot is the main character, alongside whom the viewer must not only scrutinize but also listen closely to every suspicious aspect of this extremely complex investigation in order to uncover the truth and piece together the chronology of the tragedy. Over the course of two hours, viewers will encounter a multitude of different theories, assumptions, and misconceptions that could cost not only someone’s career but also lead to someone’s death. The writers thoroughly explore many characters, casting each as a potential suspect—not to mention the protagonist, whose mental state is seriously called into question during the investigation.

The protagonist is a true professional in his field, ready to argue with his superiors to defend his point of view, but in the company of strangers, he appears uncertain, trying to keep his distance from the crowd and the loud noise, which is a major irritant for him. He possesses certain superpowers, which make him a unique specialist capable of distinguishing specific sounds amid chaotic noise, easily determining the true cause of an accident. At the same time, however, he is quite self-assured, reserved, and, in general, far from a perfect person—he has his own secrets and past mistakes for which he will sooner or later have to answer.

In addition to the detailed development of the protagonist’s arc, the film maintains a heavy, oppressive atmosphere throughout the story, laced with a distinct air of mystery—one that will have not only the plane’s passengers but also the audience on the edge of their seats, experiencing intense anxiety and numerous doubts, as they struggle to distinguish between the innocent and the guilty. The film’s only drawback is the excessive use of detective elements—intended to further complicate the already convoluted plot—which begin to feel tedious by the finale. And yet, the story turns out to be substantive, compelling, and gripping, filmed in the best traditions of the classic European detective genre with a modern twist.
