At first glance, one might say that Ken Hughes’s "Night School" differs little from its numerous counterparts in the slasher genre. At least, that’s how it might appear based solely on the basic premise. However, it’s safe to say that in terms of execution, the film looks somewhat different and is several notches above the rest. While run-of-the-mill slasher films focus primarily on the act of killing, this film has much more in common with Italian giallo films. At the heart of the story is a detective investigation involving the search for a brutal killer and an unexpected plot twist, where the killer in the end turns out to be someone completely different from the person the film had been hinting at throughout.

Ken Hughes’s direction follows a similar approach. It’s commendable that Hughes didn’t simply copy the stylistic elements of Italian giallo but adapted them in an extremely interesting and organic way to fit the style of American cinema. This includes blending it with the traditional techniques of run-of-the-mill teen slasher films. In doing so, he has created a film that feels quite original and fresh in terms of its directorial approach—one that effortlessly holds the viewer’s interest right through the end credits.

It’s impossible not to mention the commendable acting performances of the entire creative team. Rachel Ward stood out in particular, excelling in her ability to embody her on-screen character and delighting viewers with her attractive appearance.
