The film is set in 1992 in Los Angeles. The entire city is on the brink of mass race-based riots, which actually took place. No one believes in the truth and fairness of the justice system anymore, and those in power are only trying to consolidate it further. Members of an elite police unit must solve a brutal attack on a store where several murders took place. The city’s deputy police chief—a Black officer named Arthur Holland—is trying to expose the corruption of some detectives. Discord is brewing within the very structure of law enforcement. First and foremost, it’s worth noting that the screenwriters don’t pull any punches, and the story is quite brutal. The film contains a lot of violence, but all of this creates a powerful sense of immersion. We’re given a behind-the-scenes look at the world of law enforcement, guided through its darkest corners. The film boasts an impressive cast, notably Kurt Russell and Ving Rhames, who are both very convincing in their roles. There’s plenty of action here, too.

An intriguing, mature thriller about the tension and intrigue within the law enforcement system. A solid crime drama that you’ll want to revisit time and again.
