A gangster named Vit Sterling hires Jeff, a former private investigator, to track down a woman named Katie Moffat. She killed a member of Vit’s gang, pocketed $40,000, and went on the run. Jeff takes on the case, but after finding the girl, he falls in love with her.

Unlicensed private investigator Jeff Markham (Mitchell) and his partner Jack (Brody) take on a case involving the powerful gangster Whitt (Douglas). The mob boss asks Jeff to track down a woman named Katie (Greer), who not only shot White four times but also pocketed 40,000 bucks. Jeff finds Katie, but falls desperately in love with her and runs off with her to San Francisco. From there, the story unfolds in the best tradition of crime thrillers: deceit, intrigue, dead partners, money, betrayal, and the sins of the past that simply won’t leave Jeff alone.

Even though this film was made way back in 1947, it still feels quite dynamic and engaging, features unexpected plot twists, and boasts solid acting. What more could a good, solid film need? What I liked most of all was the complexity of every single character, without exception. Markham seems like the right kind of guy, but, by and large, he made his money through less-than-honest means. On the one hand, Whit is a gangster and a thug; on the other, he’s a quite affable businessman with his own code of honor (after all, it’s no secret, for example, that Al Pacino’s Godfather comes across as rather likable, even though he’s a villain through and through).

But the most brilliant character is, of course, Katie. Her motivations and personality remain a mystery practically until the very end, and in the end, it is her actions that become the leitmotif of the entire film. And all these shifts are played simply beautifully by Jane Greer. Mitchum and Douglas Sr. are also very, very good, especially when paired together.
