Originally, the screenplay for this film was an adaptation of Flaubert’s novel *Madame Bovary*. However, after reading it, David Lean found nothing of interest to him and suggested that screenwriter Robert Bolt completely rewrite it, which resulted in the film *Ryan’s Daughter*. In terms of plot, the film only loosely parallels Flaubert’s novel, drawing on only the storyline of adultery.

The story takes place in a small Irish village during World War I. Rosie Ryan, the daughter of a local innkeeper, is a very romantic young woman. But all the romance comes to an end after Rosie marries Charles, a schoolteacher. Their love turns out to be nothing more than infatuation. It is only upon the arrival of a new British officer in the village that Rosie experiences true passion and love, even though this romance is doomed from the start. And amid the passions of ordinary people, other, more global events are unfolding—war is raging in the world, and the Irish resistance is gaining momentum…

David Lean is a master of large-scale, epic films. It is precisely through these epics that he made his name, and most movie lovers associate him first and foremost with *Lawrence of Arabia*, *Doctor Zhivago*, and *The Bridge on the River Kwai*. In terms of scale, *Ryan’s Daughter* is practically on par with Lee’s other epics—featuring magnificent, monumental cinematography, the tragedies of people caught in the gears of history, and a very long runtime. It is precisely this runtime that can throw viewers off balance. After all, not all viewers have the patience to sit through 3.5 hours in one sitting (including, of course, intermissions and intermission music). Personally, my main complaint is precisely about the runtime. This story isn’t as epic as it’s made out to be. I have absolutely no complaints about the dramatic structure or the actors’ performances. Although there were conflicts on set between Lina and Christopher Jones, and Jones was constantly fooling around with Sarah Miles, this didn’t affect the acting. The only question is: why is so much time devoted to John Mills’ character, who isn’t particularly significant to the plot? Although it was Mills who won the Oscar. The role is wonderful, but completely unnecessary to the plot.

In addition to Mills, the film won an Oscar for cinematography and received nominations for sound and Best Actress.
