Renowned writer, activist and black women's rights activist Veronica Henley finds herself in a terrifying reality. Now she is a disenfranchised slave on the southern plantation, and in the company of the same poor fellows she is forced to pick cotton every day and unquestioningly endure the bullying of white overseers. It is not so easy to get out of this hell, and cruel punishment awaits all captured fugitives.

XIX century, slave-owning South. In the estate of wealthy aristocrats, a celebration is being prepared, but a bloody drama is played out on the outskirts of the estate. Because of the obstinate slave girl, Eden mercilessly tortures her other brothers. The recalcitrant girl finally understands that if the next night she does not organize an escape from the plantation, everyone risks perishing.

Our days. Passionate polemicist Veronica, having honorably endured a tedious dispute with an arrogant senator, goes to New Orleans for a conference on the protection of black rights. After a successful performance, she, despite the early morning flight back, succumbs to the persuasion of her friends to relax a little at the bar. A completely innocent bachelorette party unexpectedly turns into ... Veronica's falling on that very plantation. What is it - a nightmare, drug delirium or a nightmare in reality?

In "Antebellum" rabid journalism just creeps out of all cracks. Apparently, wanting to somehow disguise it, Bush and Renz came up with a dubious construction with a deliberately reshuffled series of events. At the output, we get the opposite effect: the viewer cannot connect the narrative falling into separate fragments for a long time, and the boring "righteous" speeches of the characters only increase the growing irritation.

Antebellum is valuable for its interesting reflections on the nature of fear. Veronica tries to associate racial discrimination with phobias deeply entrenched within the opposing forces, which impede normal dialogue. However, instead of a constructive solution to the problem, we are offered the notorious “we will not forget, we will not forgive”.

The epigraph to the film is William Faulkner's phrase about the never ending past. The same idea is used as a leitmotif in the film, but looking at the frenzy with which Veronica with a hatchet at the ready takes revenge on the descendants of the "oppressors" of her relatives, one involuntarily recalls the phrase "who remembers the old, out of sight. The behavior of the company at a table in a restaurant directly borders on rudeness.

Someone will regard these remarks as nit-picking, but what, for example, is to be done with the fact that the film is allegorical through and through, and the word "antebellum" means the period of the people's history before global social cataclysms? Than to call a new war, isn't it easier to forget and let go?
