The story of a provincial lawyer played by James Stewart, who had to defend a former military man who killed his wife's rapist in unconsciousness. But was the military man really in a state of passion and was there a rape? This is the main intrigue of the picture.

Otto Preminger often chose slippery and provocative themes for his films. For example, in The Man with the Golden Hand with the immortal Frank Sinatra, he first spoke about the issue of drug addiction. In this court drama, Preminger also relied on an 'unpleasant' rape story.

Court dramas are generally very popular in America. This genre regularly collects a large number of viewers in cinemas, and sometimes gives birth to real giants like 'To Kill a Mockingbird', favored by the film academy. Films, most of which take place in jury trials, usually come in two flavors: either a well-structured detective story aimed at surprising the viewer with unexpected plot twists, like Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution, or a serious movie that raises sensitive public issues, such as Cramer's 'Nuremberg Trials'. The plot about a drunken loser lawyer who has received a high-profile case develops too naturally, without pretending to 'dumbfounded' the viewer. Well, the question of the moral admissibility of such a murder is practically not solved. The film is mainly based on acting. America's favorite Stewart once again did not blunder, proving his professionalism. Lee Remick did not yield to him in any way. Plus excellent supporting roles by Ben Gazzara and George S. Scott. The result was a strong, but far from outstanding judicial drama, nevertheless forcing us to stare at the screen for two and a half hours.
