Review 4K Movie

“When they brought me to America, I was delighted. I thought - after all, the law works here ... ”. This is a non-verbal quote from the protagonist of The Mauritanian. I did not remember the exact phrase, but the meaning was as follows. People believe in America, in the triumph of democracy, the rule of law, laws, decency, the presumption of innocence. These are all beautiful words, do they really exist in the context of any country?

The Mauritanian is a great movie about a very strong man. It looks in one go, despite the timing and seemingly predictable finale. In the description of the film, in fact, everything is said, if not everything, then a lot. And a particularly impatient viewer can just open Google and read the story of Mohamed Slahi - the main character of "The Mauritanian", because the movie is based on real events. He is suspected of coordinating the 9/11 attacks and is taken to Guantanamo prison. Independent attorney Nancy Holander, represented by Jodie Foster, undertakes to defend Slahi before the law.

Just how does this law work? The events of September 11 are a terrible terrorist attack, which today has no analogues in scale and no matter how scary it sounds in terms of "entertainment". For thousands of deaths, all those responsible must be held accountable - before the law and the American people. But are all the suspects really guilty? It does not matter. The country demands revenge.

The story of Mohamed Slahi is a terrible thing. She smashes into pieces the illusions (if anyone still has such) about justice, humanity and the correctness of the actions of the authorities. Don't give a damn about the fate of just one person if its destruction will bring relief to thousands ... However, this film not only denounces American justice. It is also about everyone's personal prejudices. Do not think that every Muslim is capable of a terrorist attack, and every American is a born humanist. It seems like a simple thing that everyone already knows, but clarity is a great thing.

Now about the actors. Tahar Rahim is great. You believe and empathize with him. He evokes emotion, his final speech is a lump in his throat. Jodie Foster is great. A strong, confident woman, you support her. Cumberbatch is good as always, just his character is a little lost against the background of the roles of the first two.

It is worth noting the shooting, especially some flashbacks of the protagonist. When the focus is only on him in the frame, and everything around is a blurry spot. The viewer seems to be looking with his eyes, panic and fear are transmitted through the screen ...
