Someone Wilson, who served 9 years in an English prison for robbery, comes to the United States to find and punish the perpetrators of the death of his only daughter, whose corpse was found in a car that fell from a cliff. Knowing that her daughter had a heightened sense of danger, Wilson initially ruled out the possibility of nonviolent death. As it turned out, he was not mistaken. But before the truth is revealed to the viewer, behind Wilson's back there will be a bunch of corpses of dashing guys who are involved in illegal business ...

The sophisticated editing of the very first scenes, when dialogues are deliberately cut in violation of any rules, gathering from replicas of neighboring episodes, while part of the sentence can be taken from the first scene, following from the third, and the last one is generally enclosed by an image of a silent hero, is intriguing only at first. However, something similar Soderbergh has already done in the previous film 'Out of sight' (1998).

But in comparison with him, the plot twists and turns of the 'Englishman' look flat and completely devoid of wit. The director just tried to compensate for this shortcoming with experimental editing, which, it seems, interested him most of all. However, after the 'Englishman' collected on the screens of America almost 10 times less than 'Out of sight', Soderbergh abruptly jumped from low-budget cinema to the commercial camp. And his next tape - 'Erin Brockovich' - has already become a box office hit.
