I couldn't help but call my review a line from 'Romeo and Juliet'. After all, it is this tragedy that forms the basis of Steven Spielberg's new film. It certainly underwent a significant rethinking through the prism of the authors' views, but some details remain the same.

Plot. The events of the tape take place in New York in the late 1950s. Tony falls in love with Maria, despite the fact that they are in hostile factions...

The narrative proceeds smoothly, gradually introducing the main characters to the viewer. The central characters are introduced in great detail, while many of the minor characters are left out of the story. Virtually all of the dialogues and feelings of the protagonists are shown through the songs, which is, in principle, quite usual for the genre of musicals. I confess that I was a bit taken aback that at some point a transgender person appeared in the film (it's fashionable and tolerant these days, mind you), given that he has no important function for the script anyway. Closer to the finale, there is a violation of cause-and-effect connections, logic in the actions of the characters and common sense. Some characters are either completely devoid of emotion or incapable of empathy in certain situations. Because of this, the ending cannot give the full range of emotions.

Atmosphere. A nice juicy picture, beautiful locations and stylish cars fit together perfectly. The actors do a good job with their roles. I will single out Rachel Segler (Maria), who was perfectly able to get into her role and show a variety of emotions of her character. Many of the episodes are theatrical and contrived, but these are some of the obligatory elements of film musicals.

Music. You will hear many excellent songs and see a huge number of vivid scenes. I'm afraid to even imagine how much time the guys rehearsed to demonstrate synchronicity in such large-scale scenes... Just bravo! And how beautiful the singing is here... I especially want to thank our translators who decided to leave most of the songs in their original language, adding subtitles in Russian. Be prepared for the fact that some of the musical episodes are very long, and sometimes the singing may even seem out of place. The golden rule here is to sing in any situation you don't understand.
