Review 4K Movie

The Godfather 3 is the conclusion of the saga, which turned out to be ambiguous. Part of the devoted audience did not accept this ending. Some, myself included, are not so radical in their assessment.

What didn't like?

The image of Michael Corleone. It is clear that the director's creative task was to show the villain's path of redemption. He succeeded in exonerating and pitying the bandit. Al Pacino plays the role of a man who fidgets uncertainly in the face of circumstances and guiltily flirts with those around him. Not the kind of character arc one imagines after the second part of The Godfather.

I also didn't like that the gangster squabbles and the whole criminal underworld is shown in a clumsy and unrealistic way. Especially the rite of passage of power in the family. Where the first part carefully and consistently led the viewer, here crumpled puts before the fact. The character didn't deserve his power by his actions. The movie didn't show that.

I also didn't like that the movie structurally repeats the previous parts, especially the first one. The hints and references here look like tracing or self-repeating.

But all this criticism pales before the skill of the director and the grandeur of the idea. With all the flaws, the movie works and touches the viewer to the core. The family and the fear of losing it is shown so authentically that it brings tears to your eyes.

The story is about an attempt by the mafia to launder money through the Vatican, where the main character strives to leave behind all his sins, to wash away the blood from the money he earned and to move away from crime. But, as the film says, politics is crime. #The movie shows how the European aristocracy, which has been robbing the common people for centuries, for hundreds of years forming wealth, does not want to let an upstart mafioso, who in one lifetime has reached their heights financially, to come to the top. Naturally, such an impudent man must be punished and robbed of 600 million. Christianity, as one priest in the film observes, does not seep into the souls of such people like water does into a stone.

Cinematic language and symbolism are other virtues of the film. The movie begins with shots of the Corleone family home shown in the last scene being destroyed. The character shown in the next scene, seemingly having achieved unimaginable success in society, struggles throughout the story with this desolation like Don Quixote with windmills.

Most striking is the film's ending, which is both self-ironic and elevates the story into the category of timeless. The Italian opera Rural Honor, which serves as a backdrop for the finale, duplicates the trilogy's plot and reflects the social and psychological conflicts of Italian national-historical reality.

Bravo! There are scenes, phrases, and music from this film that have irrevocably become part of contemporary popular culture. It is an amazing contribution left behind by Copolla and his entire grandiose film team and Mario Puso and his classic source book.
