Review 4K Movie
I should probably confess right away that the main motivation for writing a negative review of this film is the fact that these very negative reviews of the movie 'The Godfather. Part 1" are very few. In general, of course, looking at some reviews on Kinopoisk one can study social psychology, the psychology of the crowd, which can be characterized by the phrase 'Everybody ran and I ran'.
Well, how else can one explain the fact that this creation is on the 13th place in the TOP 250 films, and on iMDB it is the second? Only the desire of people to conform to public opinion, to admire everything that many people admire and thus allegedly bring themselves closer to the allegedly elite art. This happens not only with movies, but also with musical works. How often can you come across on any site on the next nonsense from the category of 'Mozart - Requiem for a Dream', when in fact (I think you know it too), the author of this tune is Clint Massel.
But I'm getting sidetracked, because we're talking about the Godfather.
The most common argument people have for praising this film is that they call it a 'classic'. But what is a classic? A classic is something that will be treasured 'always', that evokes the same emotions as 'then', whether it was 2000,000 years ago, 100 years ago, or 1 year ago. And the best examples of that would be the music - Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and Vivaldi's Four Seasons gave you goosebumps in the time of Napoleon as well as in the time of Churchill.
And what emotions does this film evoke? Personally, I have only one - boredom and nothing more. Watching Don sit and drink tea or smoke for almost three hours is medicine for people who suffer from insomnia.
No, that's not to say that the movie is bad for me, as there's not a lot of firefights and that sweet word 'action'. But the book is read in the same breath, and the film is quite difficult to digest for an unprepared audience.
If we talk about the movie from the perspective of Mario Puzo's book, the film loses it in many ways. The book leads its entire narrative in a trinity - the history of the country - the family - the person. In the movie it is quite weak. The book abounds with gorgeous philosophical sayings, which the movie lacks. The book shows psychology and philosophy of the Mafia faction - the movie tried to show it, but it also looks rather weak.
A separate word should be said about the music and the characters. Perhaps they may indeed be called 'classic characters'. Marlon Brando, in the framework in which the director has put it, did a splendid job. After all, if you hear the phrase 'Don Corleone', it is him who comes to mind. But, alas, that is where the merits of the film's characters end.
Some critics have tried to argue that "The Godfather is the most striking metamorphosis of personality, of Michael Corleone's personality. Without trying to challenge the talent and charisma of Al Pacino, I can say that he clearly failed to transform from a caterpillar to a butterfly in this movie. Rather, it was an attempt to turn a gray moth into a swallowtail, but in my opinion it failed.
From the first seconds of the movie we see this cold, impenetrable face of a completely indifferent man, and it does not change at all in the last minutes of the movie. Where is this 'green' young man who was an idealist and went to pay his debt to his country in the army? Where is his reassessment of values? You can't see them. All you can see is that he was ready to kill both in war and in peacetime, and without remorse.
As for the character of Santino, he can be characterized as a Hollywood stamp. In the book we see a womanizer and an emotional man, but most importantly a strategist. In the movie, however, we see no more than a dumb womanizer who, except for ill-considered actions, can't do anything sensible.
And in conclusion about the music. The music is gorgeous, you could really call it 'classic'.
But the vivid image of Don Corleone and the beautiful music are not enough to call it a classic. In the end, it is not the characters and the soundtrack that we are evaluating, but the picture as a whole. And on the whole, I am faced with a rather boring, trite and trivialized creation, thanks to the narrowness of human perception.
