Australia, 1880. A small town lives in fear, and it is Arthur Burns who leaves his cave only to rob, rape and kill. To appease the townspeople, Captain Stanley takes his two brothers hostage and proposes to the middle brother Charles to find and destroy Arthur, for which he promises to release the youngest from prison.

Review 4K Movie

My half-lives were spent listening to Cave's music, so I had to watch the movie.

I'm not quite sure how to interpret the fact that the script was written in three weeks. An apology from the author that, due to a tight concert schedule, there wasn't enough time to finish it? Not really versed in genre, however, I would hesitate to call this work a western. Even though the good, the bad, and the evil are all present.

The good bandit "with a burning eye," the bad bandit, the demonic, and the evil cop, not evil at all. The family, consisting of four brothers, is a family that is torturing the civilian population. The older one is Devil-in-the-Flesh; the next one is a more humble, hesitant and confused devil (a definition much beloved by the mellifluous Soviet cinema); the next one is a miserable little evil creature; the younger one is just a miserable little devil. As befits a high-ranking devil, the older one is educated, cultured, has a taste for beauty...and relies on the institution of the family. This pretentiousness, in my humble opinion, is burdensome in movies. It speaks more of the superficiality of the author's view, rather than the penetration of the essence of things. The author pays much less attention to the other members of the family, and thank God for that.

Opposes this devilish brat Captain Stanley, kind of evil, but kind as well. According to the author's idea, a long confrontation with the TEA (see above) has given birth to immoderate, uncontrollable ambitions for his own person - the hand of God he imagines himself to be, no less. But he is a good man and, therefore, after an hour of screen acting, he realizes the fallacy and even tries something, but it is too late.

With such an obviously secondary and schematic plot it is very difficult to tune in for empathy. The indistinguishability of servants of the law and twisted villains should finally be recognized as bad cinema. As should the vulgar notion that man on the margins of civilization becomes a dumb, cruel creature, perhaps it is time to put it out of circulation, on pain of professional inadequacy. And it's not my own personal lack of faith in the healing power of culture, but...wondrous are your works, Lord.

The modern narrative becomes dramatic only if the entire space of the film is flooded with blood, plus the free bonus of the ritual sacrifice of a pregnant woman being abused by a feeble-minded boy from a gangster family. Such is the existential drama of our day. Poetic cinema as understood by the rock poet. Or should we recognize it as an established cultural tradition?

At least the director dispensed with speculation, just shackled, sorry, in the shackles of a bad script could not jump over his head. Nor is the ubiquitous acting overplayed here a sign of ineptitude, but merely the same reflection of the helplessness of the literary framework.

The musical accompaniment unobtrusively reminds the viewer that there have been better days for Cave.

Honest movie. Honest talentless cinema. I can't berate Emily Watson - it's beyond me. Cave is still good.
