While beginning in the middle of his directing career he made more mass-market, large-scale films, in his early days, his first films were mostly small-scale crime films. Such is the case with 'Killer's Kiss', his second feature film after 'Fear and Lust'.

Like Kubrick's next film 'The Killing', 'Killer's Kiss' belongs to the noir genre to the fullest extent. The film is shot within a strictly criminal framework. Even though it is only a little over an hour long (just like 'The Killing'), it has a lot of interesting developments in it.

To be honest, this film reminded me not so much of Kubrick's films as of many of Alfred Hitchcock's thrillers. Well, just think about it: mysterious, ominous music, a bit of a thriller plot. I wouldn't say there was a sudden denouement, all the same the genre doesn't imply that, but nevertheless there was a certain sense of de ja vu. Though there's nothing in common, the film somehow reminded me of 'Strangers on a Train'... And of course the final chase... Though, as far as I remember, Hitchcock didn't have anything like that in his filmography, at least from what I watched, but everything was so tense, just like watching his films...

The film is worth seeing only for true Kubrick fans, which I am. For the rest of us, it won't be of any value. He has a better film on a similar subject, 'Murder', so it's better to start there, as I did...
