Review 4K Movie

'Carrie' is a simple story. The story of a girl who was unlucky. The story of a girl who had no way out. There are many such stories in life as well as in movies. The eternal theme of outcasts in society is presented here in a very special way. Even the author of the idea, Stephen King, should have taken a closer look at this angle. Speaking of the book, in my opinion, it is very inferior to the movie. Unfortunately, King has a predisposition to... some vulgarity, or something. Certainly not everywhere, I have a lot of respect for this writer, but what De Palma has molded from the proverbial horror flick is truly great.

Carrie is just a plain girl, a regular high school girl, the object of perpetual ridicule from her classmates. Add to that sketch, her mother (played brilliantly by Piper Laurie), a religious fanatic, no friends, timidity as a dominant character trait and you get a portrait of a young martyr. Oh, and a handsome guy asks her to the school prom, and no one will answer the question whether she is sincere or whether it's another wicked joke.

Each of us once went to school, laughed with friends at the bespectacled or was bespectacled himself, threw papers at the neighbor right in class - in general, was a normal person. But if you've changed a few classes, you've probably noticed that society is structured the same way, with a leader in each class, a group of friends, a major prankster, and a single scapegoat who's not like everyone else. No doubt Carrie White's way of life was a source of derision: no one had explained to her how to take care of herself, no one had even told her about the presence of simple physiological processes... So what happens? Society itself 'grows' inferior beings to slaughter them? However, there is no philosophical idea in the film, nor is there an open compulsion to 'watch and repent', which in itself is the director's tact, taste. The touching, gentle music, Carrie's theme elevates the heroine so much that the atrocities of her enemies seem even more unjust and cruel. I found Margaret White especially terrifying.

King's idea of a demonic enemy bound to the victim by ties of kinship would later unfold in the brilliant 'The Shining'. But Carrie is not as simple as she seems. Everyone has skeletons and secrets in their closet. Even Copperfield would have envied the younger White's abilities (a telling last name, I wonder why not black?).

I was also pleasantly surprised that Brian De Palma created not just a horror film for teenagers, but a true dramatic thriller. The ending is so intense that even after the credits roll, the feeling of nightmare doesn't go away. Human cruelty is limitless. For a moment of false superiority, some throw their victims off their pedestal so rudely that they themselves die under their weight. By comparison, in the book, the ending is pathological, brutal, and completely out of place. Just like in 'The Shining'. The director as a sculptor has stripped away everything superfluous, and we got one of the most gentle, transparent and sad thriller among all King's adaptations.
