Review 4K Movie
Spouses James Foster and Em came to vacation at an Eastern European resort in La Tolca. James-a writer who wrote a flaccid novel a couple years ago. Now he spends his boring and cold everyday life seemingly on a wonderful vacation with his rich wife. A new acquaintance with Gaby and her architect husband Alban, may turn out for the couple not only an unexpected adventure, but also a disaster with an unpleasant outcome.
Actors: it is nice to see Mia Goth in the frame, who gets naked in front of the viewer in the literal and figurative sense. She has formed an aura around her that attracts James. In the beginning, the young fashionista shows herself cute and enthusiastic about James' work. But after the handjob made on the beach, it becomes clear that her heroine is not only fascinated by the acquaintance with Skarsgard's hero. In her skillful hands, she becomes a handy tool for thrills.
Skarsgard's hero had no idea that a boring and lifeless vacation on La Tolca with his wife (to whom he had grown cold) would turn out to be a nightmare for him. The vacation begins as a powerless search for inspiration and (or honeymoon) spending time with his wife Em. He endures the hardships of imprisonment. A strong and tall handsome man like James turns into a submissive puppy hopping on his hind legs. After a rather bizarre procedure, he realizes he's facing an unusual problem. On the one hand, it's a convenient procedure for foreigners. On the other, it's hard to watch the death of what seems to be the same person. Here, creator Brandon Jr. does not confront the viewer with the question of moral ethics, of what is bad or not. What's done by James is done. You can't take back a man's life. And for his new acquaintances, James becomes easy prey for manipulation. James needs to preserve the remnants of his mind before he is survived to the last drop.
The voice of conscience is Cleopatra Coleman, playing James' wife, Em. At some point, the viewer will realize that her line is not without merit, but it looks sluggish. And almost unnecessary to the plot. But Em did make her part in the plot, trying to convey to the battered writer how important it is to be exemplary in one's own country, and to leave an unfamiliar one. So Coleman is in charge of common sense. Too bad the hero didn't listen to her.
Thomas Kretschmann's character is shown to be quite judicious and anxious at the beginning, whose image of a frightening 'white' local law enforcement agency is at first very frightening, and then becomes the only lifeline for the GG.
Everything else: the tape is reminiscent of " Westworld ", and the psychopathic characters refer to a couple of Michael Haneke's "Funny Games". The unsavory scenes of violence in Cronenberg's picture evoke curiosity from every image, one should only start watching. However, the abominable acts can cause the viewer not addiction, but alienation from the tape. Therefore, the movie is not for everyone. In this fickle kaleidoscope of colors, there is room for the riotous violence of the complicated characters of the heroes. The scriptwriter and director tells us: 'What are you ready to do if you are sure of your total impunity, and most importantly, whether you can divide the world into those who can be killed and those who cannot'. By making fun of the views of his characters, the author tries to make fun of the audience as well.
Impressions: In this, Cronenberg Jr. is a lot like his father. 'Infinity Pool' is not just an inventive horror. This oil painting provides such frightening images of both main characters coming to the fore - Skarsgard and Goth. The former is impossibly naive and depressed to the level of a puppy in the subjugation of psychopaths (ready to sink to the level of a breast-fed infant); the heroine Goth tries to get a separate high from the local cloning attraction as a way of avoiding punishment for her actions. The viewer expecting quite the opposite from Cronenberg's son must be reassured. I think we should not forget that this is another man with his own vision. The author, according to his own script (and a unique one at that), creates a kaleidoscope of unpleasant and creepy images, which become funny and disgustingly attractive. The combo of Skarsgard (James Foster) and Mia Goth (Shelley Duvall) create a rare form of Brandon Cronenberg fantasy that is impossible to escape.
