A happy couple and their seven-year-old daughter are vacationing in a cottage in the woods by a lake. Suddenly, four strangers armed with strange weapons show up on their doorstep and give the campers an ultimatum: either they choose and kill someone from their own family, or the apocalypse will come, and the rest of humanity will die in torment from hell.

'Parents and daughter rent a house in the woods for the weekend. Yep, dad's name is Andrew and mom's name is Eric. A miracle happened, and the same-sex Caucasian parents had a daughter, a Mongoloid named Wen. Wen went out to catch grasshoppers (don't get the idea that the girl was hungry), and then a big, tattooed creep in glasses without diopters comes out of the woods and says in a human voice, 'Let's be friends! How's that for a start? It gets even more interesting. Newly minted friend Wen leads three more friends, armed with some kind of strange 'tools' (something between the instruments of torture of the Inquisition, and agricultural tools). Unobtrusively entering the house, the villagers offer Wen's parents a simple dilemma: kill one of you, or the whole world will perish.

For those unfamiliar with Shyamalan's work, the plot may seem somewhat far-fetched, or excessive. I admit that there will be those who will indignantly exclaim - what nonsense! Well, what, what - the usual Shyamalan nonsense, say those who have already enjoyed his films. Sit back and think what all this is supposed to mean.

What is this movie about? About the problem of moral choice? About a 'child's tear that's been clouded by long use? "Shall the world perish or shall I not drink tea? No, really - is the world worth the sacrifice of a loved one to preserve it? And by the way, why did the director choose the gay family as a sacrifice? Where are the protests and complaints of the LGBT community? Why does this...Shyamalan pose the question - either the death of one gay man or the death of humanity? It doesn't smell good, it's intolerant.

And who are those four guys with hoes? Patients on weekend leave from the local lunatic asylum? Like in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'? Are they just out to have a little fun? Or maybe they're sectarians? David Koresh and his cronies, humanely burned by the FBI, Shoku Asahara? God Kuzya? There's a theory that it's the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Well, then, the filmmaker has managed to resolve a difficult theological problem in passing. For centuries the Fathers of the Church have been wrestling with this riddle. The shells flew off their heads. Who were these four? Hunger, cold, war and disease? Or could we be dealing with the symbolism of color? Shyamalan says no! The horsemen are a handsome but slightly deformed gymnasium worker, with a head as wrinkled as a Shar-Pei's, a drunken Gasprom man, a nurse and a waitress. Whatever the era, whatever the apocalypse.

To make a sex analogy, I've long noticed that Shyamalan is good at foreplay, but beyond that... he suffers a premature climax, and most of the time, he's just skittering on the surface without penetrating deep. Intrigues the viewer, great! And then, the mise-en-scene falters, and the whole action takes on the character of a vulgar farce. The gays are perfect. One is sweet and bawdy (Madame Emotion), the other is brisk, angry and sensible (Mr. Razio). The Wen girl has a harelip. That's the devil's seal! Maybe we should have considered her as a victim. Why? Do adults and children have the same rights? Didn't Shyamalan kill the child in 'The House with the Servants'? No, that's too cruel, you can't touch children, gays are another matter. There are bound to be accusations of homophobia, and the final twist being the lack of a twist.

Shyamalan is an experienced thief, and will certainly cheat once again, watch your hands closely.

Let's face it, with a hand on this very thing - isn't this a fairy tale, a dream finale, when the harbinger of the End of the World is a huge, sweaty PEOPLE?
