Story Movie
10-year-old Cady, along with her mom and dad, gets into a car accident. Her parents are killed, and the girl is sent to live with her Aunt Gemma, an employee of a corporation that produces technological toys. Not knowing how to cope with the responsibility that suddenly fell on her, and not really wanting to spend time on her niece, Gemma introduces Cady to an experimental android doll M3gan, who has artificial intelligence. The new "girlfriend's" primary task is to protect the child from all sorts of physical and moral harm, and M3gan takes this too literally.
Review 4K Movie
Thirty years ago, in the days of video salons and the first VHS tapes, I watched the horror movie 'Child's Play' about a doll with the soul of a maniac. Back then it was fresh and even fun to some extent. And the sequels to the story were quite good. So, while watching Megan's killer doll movie, I kept remembering a movie about another killer doll, Chucky, namely the mediocre 2019 remake. Although wait a minute...
'Megan' has a lot to praise it for. I'll tip my first point for the acting. Sure, the actors don't have to reveal the deepest range of emotions, but they try. And separately I will add half a point for Violet McGraw. The young actress perfectly coped with the role of the central character. She perfectly conveyed the whole range of emotions that fell on the share of Caddy, who lost her parents, could not find a common language with her aunt, found a best friend in the person of Megan and until the last did not believe that this 'helper' in fact - the Terminator T-1000. I would love to see Violet grow into a great actress. She's got all the makings.
One more point for Megan's design. Personally, I always thought Chucky was a sinister and frightening doll that no adequate parent would buy for their child (yeah, sure - a special hello to Huggy Wuggy). A doll like Megan, on the other hand, would be any girl's dream. From such a charming cutie with expressive blue eyes it is difficult to expect villainy, and therein lies the rub. As we know, there are devils in a quiet abyss....
I will add a point for the soundtrack, and another point for the camerawork and scenery. The movie is very atmospheric and from the first minutes creates the necessary entourage. Dokinu half a point for the fact that in 'Megan' they did not shove in all the annoying agenda about LGBT-values, evil white men, oppression of people of a certain race and similar nonsense. I'll add another half a point for a couple jokes over 300. That's a little low.
For all the best that is in the new horror movie from James Wan, ruined by a talentless script. There's no other way to put it. Okay, I can hardly believe that this marvel of technology could be developed in secret from the management of the company. But what kind of super-intelligence do you have to be to put the Megane into production just a couple weeks after the first model was released? This is a frankly raw product, which is bound to have weaknesses, but in the corporation-manufacturer of toys is ready to risk everything just to release Megan before competitors. And if the emphasis is on the uniqueness and breakthrough technology of this doll, which can turn the whole industry upside down, then Megan should not have left the confines of the manufacturer's laboratory. Uh-huh, sure. Gemma lets her niece Caddy take Megan home or to a children's party so everyone can see this wonder toy. Including potential competitors - after all, the appearance of Megan on the market should become a complete sensation. And it's not a problem if photos and videos of it will run all over the net long before the announcement. Well, and one more logical question: why it was necessary to endow a child doll with the power of the Terminator, that it was able to deal with an adult man? In the original 'Child's Play' it could be explained by otherworldly forces, but in 'Megan' I don't find such an explanation. Minus two points immediately.
And another thing: if the movie is stated as a horror movie, then give the audience horror: suspense, screemers, blood and the like. Here all this is hiding behind a 'childish' PG-13 rating, which spoils the impression of the movie. There is no fear and horror in 'Megan' and there can't be any! Chucky was much more unbridled in this respect.
But I can't help but notice the main theme that 'Megan' raises - that many parents (or guardians) give their children over to smartphones, gadgets, computer games, social networks and other new-fangled gadgets. Gemma did not even try to find a common language with her niece, did not want to read a book with her or go for a walk. With Megan's help, she sought to free up time for herself, for her own needs and tasks, without thinking about what Caddy was doing. And Megan says some very valid words at the end about being able to be a better parent to a girl. And because it's true - many of today's children are being raised not by mom and dad, not by teachers and caregivers, but by social media bloggers. And what boys and girls will learn is a very big question.
