Story Movie
1990s Oregon. FBI agent Lee Harker, who has something like the gift of clairvoyance, begins to deal with a deaf case without a single clue. For decades, similar tragedies have occurred in the state: suddenly, the father of a family brutally murders his relatives, then himself, and in each case, nine-year-old daughters are among the victims. Also at the crime scenes are mysterious messages that no one has been able to decipher.
Review 4K Movie
I must give credit to the marketing campaign of the movie: if it were not for it, “Longlegs” would not have had such a hype. Of course, the one who called the movie the second “Silence of the Lambs”, embellished the reality, but the trailer, teaser and various promos said: yes, the silence will not be lambs, and Lee Harker - not Clarissa Starling, but we are waiting for an amazing and tempting spectacle. And I'd really love to say it turned out that way, but no. Instead of the promised brutal procedural we got a kind of “Silence of the Ducklings” - the movie is interesting, but in some places strange.
First of all, we were drawn to Cage as a maniac (this is not a spoiler, but a given, voiced in the very first teaser). However, we didn't see the face of the murderer until the very last. Marketers warmed us up: ooo, there is such a villain, so scary and terrifying, that when we see him, we will surely faint. And here, Kolenka on the screen, and ... Gentlemen makeup artists, do you really think that the man who in one face dragged on himself action movies, horror, dramas and - God forgive me - Dracula, could not play a serial without such makeup? In my opinion, the powder and false chin took away some of the actor's charisma, not letting him reveal himself to the fullest. If to put aside purely visual husks, Cage still can, can and pulls. From the first appearance it was impossible to take your eyes and ears off the character, although he does nothing supernatural. He doesn't chase his victims, he doesn't run around with a machete, he doesn't do a hell of a dance, he doesn't punch, he doesn't cut, but he does create a vague sense of unease in the viewer. I shrank into a lump when I was waiting for new poems or truly joker's laughter. That is, for all the downsides, the image of the maniac is wildly good and works properly.
The screenwriter, on the other hand, has made a bit of a misstep. Starting off briskly as an atmospheric procedural, the movie gradually turns into satanic paranoia, reminiscent of the combo of “Barbarian” (which is “Barbarian”, not to be confused with Eggers) and “Solstice”. Such a mix is not bad, all the more so because it results in a goosebumpy mess in the finale, but the viewer is tuned to the detective! In the first hour of screen time we are led around by the nose, promising to catch the maniac, and in the end bringing us to a good and aesthetic, but slobbern. I liked the move, but I still felt that it was possible not to mock the viewer and immediately hint at the slowness and unconventionality of the narrative. I'm fiercely sad every time a detective branch is taken out from under my nose, sorry. Although the presence of Mikey Monroe in the cast should have told us that the plot is non-trivial. In general, Osgood Perkins showed that he is well versed in the horror genre, because “Longlegs” is nothing but a throwback to “The Amityville Horror” with Mad Dad, “Annabelle” and other horror movies with cursed dolls, and even the notorious “Silence of the Lambs”. The movie assembles a puzzle of different pieces already familiar to the sophisticated viewer. Is it bad? Not at all! The pieces work perfectly as Chekhov's gun, and therefore have a place, although they lack originality.
Speaking of “Longlegs.” More precisely, about the localizers, God bless them. I understand the desire to adapt the not quite clear original title “Longlegs” into something more enticing, but with the localization went away and a share of intrigue. During the movie, it's very interesting to ponder why our maniac is called Longlegs? I had a theory that it's all about the episode when the child sees Cage from his tiny height, and the maniac seems to him a long giant, but the wonderful Easter eggs in the basement say that I'm wrong. It's a shame that those who don't know the original title are deprived of these Easterhouses.
So, in front of us, of course, no detective and certainly not a horror. Called by clever advertisers the scariest movie of the year, “Longshanks” is actually a reflection of Osgood Perkins on the dramas of his youth, from the unexpected camming-out of his famous father to the death of his mother (if you do not know about the hard fate of the director - read, much in the film will play with new colors). In the tradition of recent years, established by such masters as Ari Aster, Osgood has taken a problem that's been eating him up and wrapped it in a genre that's pleasing to the eye. I'd like to berate this movie, stomp my feet furiously and rip it to shreds, but I can't. Yes, I was cheated, but I genuinely enjoyed it. Before us is a good movie with good actors, pleasant visuals and verified from a technical point of view. To the coordinated work of the editor and sound engineer - my respect. If you're a Slowburn fan, you'll definitely enjoy it. If you are a fan of Nicolas Cage - be my guest, go to the movies. If you want action, brave cops fighting with a maniac and Clarissa Starling - go to something else.
