Story Movie

Blake learns that his father has mysteriously disappeared and is presumed dead. He inherits an abandoned family estate in Oregon. Their marriage to Charlotte is going through a rough patch, and Blake decides that a family trip will help them through the crisis. At night on the drive up to the house, their car is attacked by an unknown animal that injures Blake. In a panic, the family barricades themselves in the house, hoping the beast will leave, but soon a monstrous transformation begins to happen to Blake.

Review 4K Movie

Everyone has a list of favorite horror makers. My top one has been Lee Whannell for many years - I adore him and treat him with great tenderness. In general, any appearance of him makes me delighted and, of course, we were also waiting for Wolf Man. Today at the premiere of the movie we made sure that it was not in vain.

аbout:

In the family of a vacationing writer and his journalist wife not everything is not so smooth. Charlotte's career is clearly going better than that of her husband Blake, who devotes all his free time to their young daughter, who loves her father endlessly. An unexpected letter from the past forces the family to travel to the backwoods of Oregon, to Blake's father's old home. But at first a pleasant trip as usual (as we all know) turns into a bloody nightmare, where the family is forced to escape from a hellish monster.

What can we say about the movie?

Wannell is back this time around with a new take on the classic drama-horror hero, The Wolf Man. The first movie of the cinematic universe was released in 1941 and told us about the unfortunate Larry Taobo (this name went through many transformations and cross-overs from Frankenstein's monster to Dracula), only here the name was replaced by Blake Lovell, who has a wife, a daughter Ginger (as it turned out, our guess was correct and it's a reference to Ginger snap) and, of course, a good reason to return to the wilderness of Oregon, where instead of his brother we have a missing father waiting for us.

In an interview, Lee revealed that he was inspired by Cronenberg's Fly, which is known to all body horror fans. And indeed the disease and transformation of the protagonist's body, self-mutilation are shown here perfectly. And the werewolf himself looks more like a poor man eaten by an unknown disease than a blood-obsessed, hairy, wolf-like monster.

Thanks to a good cast, the characters don't 'jump' over the plot and don't overlap it, but still look organic. Even the minor 'player' played by Benedict Hardy made us question whether the movie is about maniacs. Christopher Abbott perfectly coped with the role of both a traumatized father, and sick with an unknown disease, not that it is already a man. By the way, Blake was originally supposed to be played by Gosling, but he just Ken remained in the role of executive producer. And well, with all the love for Gosling, this role as if it would not suit him. Lee himself also appeared in the movie, though only as a voice on the other end of a junk prehistoric radio.

The visual and plot looping of the story is very good: we start with a father and son standing in front of a valley surrounded by mountains, then we see them hiding in a hunting tower from a werewolf. This is also what the movie ends with: the hunting tower and the majestic view of the valley.

Good directorial tricks include how the character's early transformation is shown and, of course, the world through the eyes of the wolf-man: the sounds and colors and how different this world is from what we are used to. Lee has abandoned wool and many of the usual elements that accompany the classic story. Arjen Tuiten (designer) had to work on the different stages of the wolf-man's image in an effort to show the complex, slow, painful changes that emphasize body horror (there are no digital effects on the wolf). Instead of the classic furry werewolf, there is a monster on screen that combines human and wolf features.

The movie is highly recommended to watch on the big screen to marvel at the visual aesthetics. The framing is flawless as is the camerawork. And the composer's work in framing the atmosphere is good.

What's the bottom line? It's more of a drama than a horror. There aren't many scary scenes, but it makes up for it with an oppressive atmosphere. Perhaps many people will find the movie slow (there is a tendency to want to see on the screen some hellish merry-go-round with wild dynamics and 'meat grinder' of frames), but hopefully it will find its audience. We liked it and it can be safely recommended for viewing on a winter evening.
