Review 4K Movie

Bring Her Back. A film with a telling title, which turned out to be not at all what I expected, but exactly what I should have seen long ago.

Plot:

Andy (Billy Barratt) takes care of his nearly blind younger sister Piper (Sora Vong). After their father's death, they move in with their new guardian, Laura (Sally Hawkins). Laura was not chosen by chance. She has extensive experience as a child psychologist and raising a blind daughter who, unfortunately, drowned. Now there is another child living in the house — Oliver (Misha Haywood), a boy who has not spoken since his personal tragedy. It would seem that everything should be fine, but with each passing day, anxiety grows in this house, and it seems that Laura has decided to become a new “mother” to the orphaned children, not only out of altruism.

For the first time in my memory, a warning about uncomfortable and bloody scenes appeared before the start of the film. Thank you, it was justified.

The plot of the film is tied to resurrection (even the title makes it clear), otherworldly forces, and rituals. This theme is where the “horror part” lies.

There are small screamers, there is uncomfortable music, there are scenes with elements of trauma and injury, some of which cause terrible discomfort. (For someone who treats teeth, any scene involving tooth loss hits close to home).

But this is not really a horror movie. Or not only that. It is a mystical horror and psychological thriller.

This film is about acceptance. About how differently people experience loss. About how love, experiences, and sadness can affect a person, forcing them to cross the line. It's about trying to take “extreme” measures, and how sometimes good intentions can lead to blind madness.

It touches on themes of parents and children, mutual support, and the search for inner strength.

The film's visuals are pleasant but not flashy. There is no special music. There are details and angles that are pleasing to the eye. The good work of the directors is evident. The house, as the main location, seems alive, closed off, almost suffocating within itself. But the main thing is the story, the characters, and empathy for them.

Sally Hawkins is very well suited to roles of strange and frighteningly ordinary characters. Here she is disturbing, frightening, and... very human.

All the children who appear in the film are cool, lively, and authentic. There are no questions about their acting.

It seems that since the release of Jordan Peele's Get Out, the genre has really come to life. And A24 is directly involved in this process. Now horror movies are not just screamers and gallons of blood. They are social and moral reflections, they are characters who face the transcendent while going through internal trauma. And they also feature great actors in leading and supporting roles.

Bring Her Back is further proof that horror films can be very personal, very poignant, and very good. But be prepared for a sinking feeling after watching it.
