Two girls are found in an abandoned cabin in the thick of the forest. Mysteriously, they have lived in the empty house for five years. The orphans are taken in by their only relatives, a young married couple. But the girls are not alone, they have a mother, and she comes from the darkness....

Guillermo del Toro's mystical horror film Mama is one of my favorite horror movies, despite its simplicity. Yes, perhaps this film is full of clichés such as sudden loud noises, but the plot and the image of Mama herself more than compensate for these shortcomings.

The film begins with a bank clerk going mad, killing all his employees and his wife, then taking his two young daughters and fleeing with them to the forest. There, he plans to kill them too, and then shoot himself, but suddenly a creature appears from a black wall and breaks his neck. From that moment on, the girls begin to live with “Mama.” Four years later, their uncle finds the feral sisters and takes them home with him, and the terrifying creature from the wall “moves” in with him along with the girls.

Although the film cannot be called new, it was released in 2013, the special effects and the image of “Mama” herself impressed me quite a bit. The creature looks quite scary and unusual, which is something I always find lacking in horror films. And the story itself is interesting, not just some “evil spirit that was disturbed and now wreaks havoc.” There is a fascinating backstory that makes you feel a little sympathy for “Mama.” And I liked the ending too. It's there, and it's very good! Which is often not the case in horror movies like this. Of course, the film is not without its flaws, but overall, I highly recommend watching it on a cozy evening.
