Story Movie

One night in a small town, 17 junior high school students ran away from home at the same time and disappeared without a trace. They were all in the same class, and only one boy did not disappear. For a month now, the police have been unable to find any clues, and the inconsolable parents believe that the new homeroom teacher is somehow involved.

Review 4K Movie

Finally, the long-awaited new film by Zack Craig, who caused a stir in the film world three years ago, has been released. We are among those viewers who were blown away by Barbarian. The most important thing is not to have any information about the film before watching it, except that it is a horror movie. The same applies to Weapons. It's enough to watch trailer #1 without any unnecessary details to get excited about seeing it in a dark movie theater. Probably the best thing to do is to call a bunch of friends, not give them any spoilers, hype up the movie, and watch it together in the same or another theater. It's really awesome!

This is, in a good way, an entertaining film that emphasizes the word “entertain.” Of course, if you want to think, philosophize, and understand the microcosm of the plot, that's not forbidden. It's just that while watching, you feel a decent cascade of human emotions: scary, creepy, funny, sad. Relying on his style, which captivated many in Barbarian, Zach Kreger again delays specific answers to some questions until the very end. He reveals information in portions through six main characters. Each of them intersects with the others. The intensity builds powerfully. The tension is at its peak. The final scene evokes mixed feelings. The reaction in the theater will be stormy.

So, what is Weapons about? After the screening, walking through the dark streets of the city, we didn't rack our brains trying to find the one and only correct hidden meaning. The director and screenwriter himself admits in an interview that it's better for everyone to have their own version than for the film to be understandable to everyone without any room for interpretation. Naturally, haters will immediately accuse Zack Kreger of lazy directing or a weak script, which can be used as an excuse, but if you watch this new film not with logic, but simply immersing yourself in its conditional reality, then there will be no room for accusations. That's why the old man admires David Lynch, who is not used to spelling everything out.

I don't want to share the details here, so as not to give away any spoilers. Let's repeat: it's better not to know anything before watching it. Well, it's 2:17 a.m. when all 17 children suddenly wake up in the middle of the night, leave the house, and run away in an unknown direction. Is this a reference to room 217 from Stephen King's The Shining? Yes and no. Maybe it's because the so-called “devil's hour” between two and three in the morning is approaching? Yes and no. What difference does it make when this detail is in the film and it works for the plot? Symbolism is still there, but sometimes it's enough to just immerse yourself and enjoy without trying to reduce everything to logical conclusions. It's better to just feel it.

And we'll make you happy (or sad): not all questions will be answered. So, for us personally, it's a scary urban legend with a dash of Stephen King, which can be used to scare kids. Although nowadays, the only way to scare them is to threaten to take away their phone or turn off the internet, driving them to hysterics. What we saw is a little like the famous story of the piper who rid the city of rats but was not paid, so he decided to take 100 or 130 children with him thanks to his enchanting music. But there are no rats or pipers in the film, so who or what made 17 children leave their families and run away in the middle of the night? Perhaps Zach Kreger didn't choose the most original approach, but clearly...

He managed to make his film compelling until the very last frame. What does that mean? It's never boring. The division into chapters only encourages you to want to know more through the characters. At one point, you even sit there and wonder, wait a minute, the children are missing, why aren't they showing anything about them, while instead the director-screenwriter focuses on adult men and women. This is delightful! Especially when the cast includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, and the incredible Amy Madigan, you want to enjoy them too. A special thank you for the scene with one character's dream, when you suddenly remember your own nightmares and feel that it's so similar. All in all, it's a fascinating spectacle!

Zach Kreger's Weapons... Benedict Wong is terrifying as hell. Josh Brolin is brutal as always. Julia Garner is seductive with her delicate features. A completely different from Han Solo, tired Alden Ehrenreich. And what about Amy Madigan in her role! She is probably the main star of the film. How can we forget Justin Long, even though he appears very little, but let him be Zack Kreger's talisman, appearing in each of his new films. And yes, the bulging eyes are especially frightening on screen. They were shown so vividly every time that they could haunt your dreams and disturb your sleep. So, they achieved their goal. There is horror, there is comedy, there is thriller. Let's rejoice.
