1986. The Smerl family, who live in Pennsylvania, buy an antique mirror for one of their daughters' confirmation. It is the very same mirror that caused Ed and Lorraine Warren to nearly lose their newborn daughter Judy 22 years ago. Now she has grown up and, having inherited her mother's gift of hearing and seeing the otherworldly, tries to ignore the increasingly frequent terrifying visions that come to her. Meanwhile, all sorts of strange things begin to happen in the Smerl family's home.

Overall, the film is positioned as a horror movie, but there is much more drama here. For almost the entire first hour, there are no particular scares. There is a certain mysticism, there are miraculous survivals, and there is a lot of talk about life, growing up, gifts, etc. Overall, even this format does not cause any particular complaints when everything is balanced. But in this film, the conversations still predominate. And this is despite the fact that the film positions itself more as a chronicle of rather mystical events in a single family. That is, there are still demons here. And the exorcists here are the familiar Warren family from the series.

By the way, the casting director deserves praise for choosing a very suitable actor for the role of young Warren. However, for some reason, there are no photos of this actor on Kinopoisk. He looks very much like a young Patrick Wilson.

Otherwise, the film is very standard. There are objects with spirits, there are grandmothers, there are possessed people, there are scary toys, and there are references to previous parts of the series and spin-offs. Therefore, even with its impressive box office, the film is rather derivative. But the film's high box office shows that such mystical biographical stories are quite interesting to viewers. Even the rather illogical ‘The Conjuring’ was warmly received.

Therefore, this film is quite suitable for a one-time viewing, but it's best not to expect anything out of the ordinary. Everything will be predictable right up to the credits. There will also be scary jump scares accompanied by loud noises.

According to the plot, the film is positioned as the final installment, when the Warrens are trying to leave their business of exorcising evil spirits and live a normal life. Although this is strange in the sense that demons have not actually gone anywhere and are quite ancient entities. The film doesn't even really show that the more experienced ones are teaching the next generation how to fight various kinds of paranormal phenomena. This was only shown in the finale, when the chronicles with real people were shown again.

So, although the film is watchable overall, it is very disposable. There is no particular depth here, but it does not cause disgust either.
